Assistant Director of Student Communications

Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Student Communications, the Assistant Director of Student Communications manages the design and marketing of print and digital media communication campaigns targeted to students (both Montclair and Bloomfield campuses), on behalf of Division of Student Development and Campus Life (SDCL) units and other student-centric offices. The Assistant Director generates content, schedules and coordinates daily messaging across multiple channels, consistent with the University brand.  The Assistant Director for Student Communications serves as a liaison with professional, administrative and academic content providers across campus.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establishes and maintains communication and cooperative working relationships with campus partners, college administrators, faculty, staff, students and student organizations, in order to accomplish the objectives of the department.

  • Supports all campus partners, staff and administrators within and beyond the Division of Student Development and Campus Life, and the Bloomfield campus, by developing student centric communication campaigns, building print and digital media platforms and creating advertising materials for optimal reach. 

  • Develops print and digital media strategic plans and materials; adhere to and enforce the University brand guidelines among the division. 

  • Conducts research and prepares department annual report; compiles, summarizes and analyzes data and develops findings, conclusions and recommendations.

  • Acts as primary backup for emergency communications; responds to and accurately distributes messages to the campus community in a crisis through text alerts, emails, social media and the web.

  • Manages and performs functional duties alongside the Director in regards to the department operating budget of roughly $300,000.

  • Supervises Red Hawk Life and Hawk Squad student social media teams; provide guidance and support in development of creative content for their accounts.

  • Approves all social media content including posts, stories, graphics and short-form video content including larger productions and photoshoots; provide critiques and ensure all content meets expectations and brand standards.

  • Assist with the social media planning and development for the mascot and pupscot programs, Team Rocky and Team Pebbles.

  • Supervises and mentors the department Graduate Assistant of Communications and Digital Media and the Technical Developer.

  • Assists with the planning and execution of annual, department-wide training for student leaders. 

  • Assists with student-centric web updates including oversight of the NEST portal and announcements.

  • Consults with the Director to resolve problems and concerns; revise and enforce policy as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in from an accredited college or university in Marketing, Communication, or related field.

  • Minimum of three years of professional work experience in social and digital media, email marketing, communication and digital content and messaging analytics.

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite or related software, photo and video production and editing and the Google Suite.

  • Basic understanding of HTML and web development within a CMS.

PREFERRED:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university

  • Experience working in Higher Education and with college students.

  • Experience with crisis and/or emergency alert communications.
