Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Laboratory Supervisor in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. Here, you will conduct a wide variety of technical procedures, operate a state-of-the-art integrated instrument system, and perform esoteric tests with current technology.  Responsible for quality control, instrument maintenance, and method development to support a broad menu of routine chemistry, toxicology, endocrinology, immunochemistry, and therapeutic medications tests.  Works collaboratively with colleagues, participates in process improvement projects, and trains MT students.  This Department is the Chemistry Laboratory.  This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

 

Eligible for a Sign-On Bonus up to $10,000

 

In consultation with the Laboratory Manager and Medical Director, the Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for all the technical aspects of the designated laboratory department. Responsibilities include supervision of day-to-day operations, oversight of personnel, implementation of new procedures, methods, and instruments, and ensuring all training, accreditation, and competency standards are met. 

 

Essential Job Functions 

  • Oversees day-to-day operations of the laboratory department and provides overall direction and assistance to testing personnel
  • Works with team to identify and resolve problems
  • Ensures turnaround time goals and quality metrics are consistently met
  • Oversees department staffing schedules and addresses shortages as required
  • Maintains inventory to meet operational needs
  • Interacts with internal and external customers to ensure proper sample handling, reporting and resolution of questions and concerns
  • Serves as a communication liaison between internal and external entities. Ensures that staff and leadership team are getting timely and appropriate information
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements as well as institutional and departmental policies and procedures
  • Participates in ongoing laboratory accreditation and inspection preparation
  • Review of quality control, maintenance, and quality assurance documentation
  • Updates and maintains policies and procedures, training and competency records, and proficiency testing program
  • Trains and assists team members in the proficient and safe use of equipment in accordance with departmental policies and procedures
  • Oversees team members competencies and addresses any performance gaps
  • Participates in hiring new team members
  • Engages in coaching and management of staff performance
  • Ensures employees receive ongoing feedback and development opportunities
  • Aligns the team goals with the organization PRIDE values
  • Plans and supports employee engagement activities
  • Acts as lead in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new clinical laboratory procedures, assay validation, equipment interface, and processes
  • Ensures projects are on-track and completed within assigned timeframe and the communication of changes occurs  
  • Perform testing as necessary

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must satisfy CLIA ‘88 qualification requirements for testing personnel performing high-complexity testing
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biology or other laboratory science (medical technology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related scientific field)
  • Ability to write laboratory procedures and policies
  • At least five years’ experience in the clinical laboratory; minimum of one year at a leadership or supervisory level
  • Certification (or eligibility), in a laboratory specialty through American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent
  • Ability to write laboratory procedures and policies
  • Ability to train, supervise, and provide leadership in a team-oriented management structure
  • Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory instrumentation
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and laboratory/hospital information systems. Proven ability to use computers for data entry, retrieval, and statistical analysis
  • Able to handle large volumes of work within narrow timeframes and remain organized with a precise attention to detail 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience using Roche Diagnostics Cobas 8000/8100 automation lines, including hands on troubleshooting
  • Experience in a high-volume processing (academic, clinical, or reference lab) in Chemistry & Blood Gas testing
  • Previous Quality experience in CAP inspections, quality control review, method validations, proficiency testing programs

Compensation & Benefits Overview

 

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits.  The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

 

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
