Mary & Elizabeth - Director of Nursing, Emergency Services

Overview

Responsible for directing, planning, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating nursing care and patient outcomes. Responsible for resource management, policy and program development, and fiscal management. Some may be responsible for 24/7 operations of a particular department/unit.

Responsibilities

1. Design, directs and oversees nursing practice for delivery of services to patients and families. 2. Direct personnel actions related to areas of responsibility including, but not limited to hiring, performance management, staff development, disciplinary action, etc. Oversee recruitment and performance management for nursing leaders within scope of responsibility.

3. Formulates and implements hospital and departmental goals for assigned areas. Integrates goals with overall hospital strategies, objectives and plans.

4. Serves as resource in area of expertise within the facility. Maintains effective working relationships, communication, and collaborative decision making with members of the medical staff, other departments, leadership staff, employees, community and others.

5. Provides leadership and effective personnel management by maintaining and evaluating employee performance and attendance, and providing opportunities for staff development.

6. Promotes and communicates the culture, values, and commitment of UofL Health through programs that ensure provision of high quality levels of service excellence.

7. Maintain a spirit of inquiry utilizing nursing evidenced-based practice findings and research methodologies to improve the care delivered.

8. Develops base staffing patterns for each area and ensures availability of sufficient qualified nursing staff to meet patient care needs while maintaining productivity.

9. Performs duties as administrator on call as needed.10. Participates in community activities on behalf of the hospital. Assists in community health events and education as needed.

11. Responsible for delivery of quality care and ongoing quality improvement efforts. Assists with quality management hospital wide. Monitors patient outcomes and develops corrective action as needed.

12. Supervises employees to ensure quality work.

13. Develop and support a shared governance structure. Assure staff participation in department and organizational nursing structures.

14. Maintain an active leadership role in support of UofL Health nursing, committees, and program development.

15. Current knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. 16. Partner with Finance in preparation of annual budgets; evaluates budget variances regularly. Ensures that supply inventories are adequately maintained in order to provide quality and continuity of care.

17. Leads the organization in maintaining and achieving licensure, regulatory and accreditation standards.

• Project management including planning and organization of resources to move a specific task, process, department or service line toward completion. Will assist with definition of goals and objectives of the project and determines when the various project components are to be completed and by whom.

• Set and manage expectations.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Administration, Education or other Leadership field (required)
  • If Master’s Degree in other discipline outside of Nursing, then Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (required)
  • PhD or DNP in Nursing (preferred)

Experience:

  • Seven (7) years of experience as an RN (required)
  • Five (5) years of leadership experience (required)

Licensure:

  • Active Kentucky Registered Nurse License or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required)

Certification:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)

National Nursing Certification in Field of Specialty completed within 1 year of hire date (required)
