The Perfect Balance: Managing School and Work as a College Student

The Perfect Balance: Managing School and Work as a College Student

Imagine…. You just got that job or internship you’ve long been waiting to hear from. After getting the news, you’re celebrating, looking back at the article you read on how to find an internship, and not even thinking about how you’re gonna manage both school and your new internship/job.

The truth is, college is overwhelming, and adding a job or an internship may make matters even more stressful. That doesn’t mean it isn’t manageable however. With proper structure, planning, and organization, students can manage both ends simultaneously while giving some time to themselves as well. Read about how college students around the nation manage their time effectively below!

Plan Plan Plan!:

I make a schedule for the week and make sure that the workday ends at the required time. No work comes home with me even with a remote job.”

“I keep myself organized and manage my time with Notion! I have a weekly planner and monthly calendar that I follow. I also make sure to complete my assignments earlier if I know that I have a busy day with work.”

Having a planner is practically a necessity when dealing with both school and work. With one, you’ll really be able to map out your days and make sure enough time and focus is being put on what’s important. Going into your days mindlessly can add excessive amounts of stress when trying to focus on both school and work.

Open Up:

“Be transparent with leadership in your jobs, classes, and clubs! People tend to be very understanding, so long as you fulfill your commitments and communicate, balance will be easier.”

“Communicating with your employer is extremely important as it ensures that they don’t overwork you or load you up with too many projects. Most of the time, they’ll understand and will allow you to set some extra time for school”

Employers understand that, even if you’re committed to the job, the main priority is still school. So, if you’re feeling under pressure and stressed out by both school and work, let your employer know and they’ll be sure to make adjustments that will allow you to put some more time into schoolwork.

Set Some Time for Yourself:

“I make sure I have at least one or two days off a week to rest, catch up on assignments, and organize.”

“Having STRICT work hours vs. school hours vs. self care hours is very important to make sure things don’t get too stressful.”

Self care is so important! Don’t become a workaholic and take away from rest so you can work on a school assignment or a work project, it will only add extra stress to your already busy schedule. Having a set time to rest will allow you to recharge, focus on your life, and help you perform better in future school-related and work-related activities with more energy!
