PostgreSQL Engineer

Overview

Abile Group has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a PostgreSQL Engineer supporting an Intelligence Community Customer in Lorton, VA. As a Network Engineer, you will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and maintaining the network infrastructure. Your expertise will contribute to the seamless operation of the customer systems, ensuring high availability, reliability, and security. You will work collaboratively with the IT team to support various projects and initiatives on both classified and unclassified networks.

The right candidate will possess the below skills and qualifications and be ready to handle all responsibilities independently and professionally.

Responsibilities

• Administers, maintains, and troubleshoots PostgreSQL and Oracle databases in production, staging, and development environments.
• Performs database upgrades, patches, backups, restores, and migrations (including Oracle to PostgreSQL migration initiatives).
• Develops and implements database security policies and user access controls.
• Monitors database performance and tunes for optimal efficiency (e.g., indexing, query optimization, partitioning).
• Supports high availability, disaster recovery, and replication strategies (e.g., PostgreSQL streaming replication, Oracle Data Guard).
• Automates routine tasks using PL/pgSQL, PL/SQL, and scripting languages (Bash, Python, etc.).
• Collaborates with application developers to optimize schema design and stored procedures.
• Creates and maintains documentation on architecture, processes, and policies.

Qualifications

Clearance Required: TS/SCI.

Degree: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

• 5+ years of hands-on experience as a DBA working with PostgreSQL (v11 or later).
• 3+ years of experience managing Oracle databases (11g/12c/19c).

Desired Certifications:

• PostgreSQL or Oracle certifications (e.g., PostgreSQL CE, Oracle OCP).

Required Skills:

• Strong understanding of SQL, PL/pgSQL, PL/SQL, and advanced database features (e.g., window functions, CTEs).
• Experience with database migration tools (e.g., Ora2Pg, AWS DMS, or custom ETL processes).
• Proficiency in performance tuning and query optimization for both PostgreSQL and Oracle.
• Experience with replication, clustering, and high availability setups.
• Solid understanding of backup/restore procedures, disaster recovery, and security hardening practices.
• Familiarity with cloud database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Oracle Cloud).

Desired Skills: 

• Experience with Oracle to PostgreSQL database migrations.
• Working knowledge of DevOps pipelines, CI/CD, or infrastructure as code tools (Terraform, Ansible).
• Experience with monitoring tools like pgAdmin, pgBadger, Oracle Enterprise Manager, or Prometheus/Grafana.
