Staff Software Engineer – Backend (Payments & Commerce)

Bolt is a mission-driven fintech company revolutionizing commerce infrastructure through its universal shopper network and next-gen platform supporting embedded finance and real-time payments. We seek a Staff Backend Engineer to lead scalable, fault-tolerant payment systems infrastructure and backend architecture at scale.

Skills

8+ years backend engineering experience with languages such as Go, Java, Kotlin, Rust.
Deep knowledge of payments infrastructure including tokenization, card networks, ISO 8583, PCI.
Strong understanding of event-driven systems, data consistency models, and system reliability.
Ability to reason through complex distributed systems and make pragmatic trade-offs.

Responsibilities

Design and implement backend services for payment acquisition, routing, risk evaluation, settlement, ledgering, and reconciliation.
Build distributed systems that meet 5 9s reliability, low-latency, and high-throughput requirements.
Collaborate with banks, PSPs, and card networks to integrate payment rails and protocols.
Lead architectural reviews and make strategic decisions for backend scalability and maintainability.
Partner with frontend, data, and infrastructure teams to ensure end-to-end system integrity.
Set engineering standards and mentor backend engineers across the organization.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field preferred
