Overview

As one of the nation's largest public library systems with a network of 60 neighborhood libraries and the Center for Brooklyn History, Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is committed to providing the borough's 2.7 million people quality services and a vibrant learning environment through diverse and multi –lingual educational and cultural programs for people of all ages, with a strong emphasis on services for children and youth.

 

BPL’s Outreach Librarians work in communities across Brooklyn and are dedicated to providing excellent customer service, developing and strengthening fruitful partnerships with local residents and community-based organizations, while implementing programs and services aligned with our mission and vision. A special focus will be on establishing satellite library services and programs in traditionally underserved communities as well as neighborhoods where library construction projects will interrupt traditional library access for the community. This position requires professional knowledge and judgment, including, but not limited to, reference and reader’s advisory services utilizing materials both in print and electronic resources, collection development, and individual/group programming. The successful candidate will also possess excellent customer service skills and the ability to initiate and sustain community partnerships. Additionally, the candidate is expected to collaborate with staff in neighborhood libraries and various BPL departments to provide services, develop programs and conduct outreach. The staff member will directly report to the Library Satellite Coordinator. 

Responsibilities

  • Initiates partnerships with community agencies to promote BPL resources and programs.
  • Participates in outreach and community events; Supports class and school visits
  • Acts as an advocate for children, young adults, adults and their educational and social needs within the library and engages in work with schools, and other local agencies that work with children, young adults and adults.
  • Plans, conducts and evaluates age-appropriate programs for children, families, young adults and adults.

  • Registers families for library cards and other BPL initiatives both on and offsite.
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services & offers bibliographic instruction.
  • Participates in continuous learning and development programs and opportunities as part of BPLs learning culture
  • Attends meetings, trainings and serves on committees when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school; Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York, required
  • Ability to travel to various libraries in the BPL system and to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills; Strong presentation and programming skills
  • Experience in use of the online public access catalogs (Sierra a plus)
  • Familiarity with internet electronic databases, social media and basic computer applications
  • Basic understanding of current and emerging library technology, trends, and public library issues
  • 2- 3 years of experience working with the public and diverse communities preferred
  • Strong teamwork & teambuilding skills; respectful of team members’ input
  • Bilingual skills highly desirable
  • Candidate must be flexible, able to handle multiple competing priorities and tasks

 

This position is a union position, represented by District Council 37. The salary for this position is $68,176.
