Product Design Manager

Mission

Finch was started by 2 friends (Nino & Steph 🙇🏾‍♂️🙇🏻‍♀️) who struggled with anxiety and depression and found self-care challenging to stick with. We decided to build Finch hoping to make self-care fun and accessible after seeing many others share similar struggles. Finch was launched in 2021, and our team is grateful to have helped over 20 million people on their mental health journeys.

Finch is profitable and we believe in responsible growth. We are a small but mighty team who are passionate about mental health.

Role summary

Join as our first Design Manager that’s a hybrid manager & IC role to lead a team of 4 talented designers who are passionate about making self-care easy and fun for everyone! You will be an instrumental creative partner to lead a high caliber design team while also directly crafting designs to tackle product challenges.

Key responsibilities

  • Grow and lead a talented and diverse team of senior+ designers that consistently delivers high-quality products

  • Mentor and develop the skills and talent of the designers, coaching them to success and impact

  • Be hands-on with designing playful & delightful high-fidelity product experiences that can touch wellness exercises, gaming mechanics, growth loops, and more. Prototype concrete solutions to ambiguous product challenges.

  • Lead designers through thoughtful design critique that balances product vision, speed, and business potential.

  • Establish and evolve design norms, tools, and frameworks that enhance team productivity and product quality.

  • Be a strategic thought partner in defining the long-term vision and product roadmap.

  • Work cross-functionally with our product leads, artists, animators, marketing folks, and cofounders.

  • Do whatever it takes to help the team to succeed, where you will need to learn new things quickly, be creative at solving problems, and dive into any challenge. All in a fast-paced and scrappy startup environment.


Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in design, including 3+ years in a leadership role managing teams and some startup experience.

  • Consistent track record of effectively managing top talent. You can navigate and lead through ambiguity, setting clear goals and priorities for others.

  • Experience recruiting strong designers and building a team with high excellence.

  • Strong background in designing consumer mobile products with a deep understanding of design best practices.

  • Ability to untangle vague conceptual problems, and have a sharp intuition for the most accessible mental models and flows, so users can immediately start gaining value out of the product.

  • Strong eye for visual polish and user delight. You can create and prototype clear, intuitive, and appealing UI and interactions and enjoys thinking playfully & creatively.

  • Pragmatic about the implications and practicality of designs. You don't get stuck on pretty UI or deep abstractions, and can balance between craft, speed, and product goals.

  • Data-driven and have experience with A/B testing, balancing qualitative and quantitative data.

  • Experience creating design systems and applying systems-thinking to improve the efficiency of the design team.

  • Excellent communication skills and can effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Big plus if you have hands-on experience with coding, illustration, game design, or motion graphics.
