We are seeking a skilled and driven Simulation Scientist to join our team and help us shape the future of energy. This person will play a visionary role in architecting and implementing our world-leading fusion reactor design and optimization tools. They will develop high-performance computational models and workflows that span multiple scales, from atomic interactions to reactor-scale dynamics, and work closely with domain experts. This work will directly inform the design, safety, and efficiency of our fusion systems and help chart our path to commercially viable fusion energy.
What you’ll do:
Simulation Workflow Development: Design and build computational tools that integrate existing simulation codes (CFD, neutron transport, atomistic, and others) into a robust and high-performance reactor design framework
Reduce Time-to-Solution: Employ state-of-the-art methods to accelerate simulations, for example differentiable programming, GPU acceleration, and machine learning
Interact Across the Company: Work closely with our diverse team of scientists, engineers, and external partners to deliver key design specifications to our R&D programs
Future Planning: Help define Focused Energy’s long-term simulation, HPC, Digital Twin, and workforce roadmaps
Contribute to a Global Effort: Significantly advance our understanding of inertial fusion reactor design and publish these advances in high impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals
Who you are:
Significant Technical Expertise: PhD in Computer Science, Computational Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field and 8+ years of experience in code development for computational modeling. A focus on multicomponent, multiscale, or multiphysics simulation codes or workflows is highly desired
Motivated and Agile: Demonstrated success implementing efficient and varied solutions to complex modeling problems, with a strong attention to detail and scalability
Collaborative: Experience in multidisciplinary teams and communicating across scientific and engineering fields
Experienced Simulation Developer: Expert in programming languages such as Python, C++, or Fortran, and experience with parallel computing frameworks (e.g., MPI, CUDA). Proficient in modern software engineering practices including continuous integration, testing, and verification. Familiar with high-performance computing environments and/or cloud-based simulation platforms
Preferred Experience: Experience in Laser Fusion energy research or related field, familiarity with established nuclear design and analysis software, model validation and calibration using experimental data, machine learning techniques for model acceleration or data analysis
