Software Developer (Backend Services)

Foursquare is an independent location technology and data cloud platform focused on delivering precise market analytics and location-based experiences. We seek a Backend Services Software Developer to build scalable backend systems and core API products within our hybrid New York office environment.

Skills

Proficiency in Scala or another JVM language with willingness to learn Scala
Experience with relational or document-oriented databases, preferably MongoDB
Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
Strong communication and collaboration skills
Experience working with production-level code

Responsibilities

Build and maintain backend APIs and low-latency, large-scale systems
Design real-time data storage and retrieval supporting user-facing features
Ensure high availability and optimize performance through testing and monitoring
Collaborate with data scientists to integrate and productionize machine learning models
Apply best practices in software quality, testing, and CI/CD
Work cross-functionally with product, data, and engineering teams to deliver impactful features
Translate complex technical and product requirements into actionable engineering work

Education

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
