Manager HIM Coding

Job Description:

The leader is responsible for managing the daily activities of the coding and abstracting functions for the Peaks region and/or for managing the activities of the hospital emergency department charge capture functions.

Responsible for managing the daily operations of the hospital coders and hospital emergency department charge capture team.

The manager will be a liaison between the centralized coding system and Peaks Region care sites and
will communicate and maintain relationships with the affiliate finance department related to revenue cycle operations and quality department related to coded quality initiative and publicly reported data.

This position requires extensive and broad knowledge and expertise of all facility coding (inpatient, outpatient, ED, SDS, etc) and coding regulatory and payer requirements (coding guidelines, NCCI/LCD/NCD edits, etc). They work closely with CDI, Physician Advisors, clinical departments, Compliance, Revenue Service Center, the outsourced facility coding vendor, payers and patients.

This position reports to the HIM Coding Director.



Essential Functions

  • Manages the daily operations of coding and ED charge capture departments. Collaborates with the department management team in planning, program development, human resource management, budget planning, customer satisfaction, patient safety, communication, and compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Identifies opportunities for improved processes including the use and integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and/or other automated processes.
  • Maintains appropriate staffing to manage volumes and maintain accounts receivable goals, adjusting staffing as needed.  Promotes cross-training, up-skilling, and staffing flexibility to meet the department's needs. Reviews and sets coding and charge capture productivity standards.
  • Coordinates, communicates, and tracks inpatient diagnosis related groups (DRG) validation reviews and RAC denials.  Reviews patient’s health information record and uses regulatory guidelines to compose appeal letters to third party payers as appropriate.
  • Manages human resource functions such as interviewing, selection, onboarding, orientation, education/training, feedback, performance evaluation, and ensures adherence of department policies and procedures for internal caregivers and contract personnel.  Maintains personnel files including competencies, training, and discipline.
  • Manages completion and accuracy of required state hospital association submitted data and resolves edits.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory guidelines and established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Physical Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or bachelor's degree in a health-related field required
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required
  • Demonstrates proficiency in all types of coding for a large inpatient health care facility
  • Demonstrates excellent leadership qualities
  • Experience with Solventum coding software and EPIC is preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.
  • Frequent interactions with customers that require employee to communicate as well as understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer, phone, and cable set-up and use.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transport, pull, and push equipment. Will also work on hands and knees and bend to set-up, troubleshoot, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 

$44.33 - $68.42
