Scientific Innovation and Strategic Investments Intern (Summer)

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) is an economic development and investment agency with a mission of supporting the growth and development of the life sciences in Massachusetts.

Through public-private funding initiatives, the MLSC supports innovation, research and development, commercialization, and manufacturing activities in the fields of biopharma, medical device, diagnostics, and digital health. As a quasi-public agency, the MLSC also offers programs that fund innovation-driven economic and workforce development initiatives in Massachusetts.

The Scientific Innovation and Strategic Investments team is responsible for understanding innovation funding needs to develop programs that address these opportunities, as well as maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the ecosystem. The team currently manages programs for early-stage companies, support for translational research, in addition to capital programs for non-profit research institutions with company partnerships. The team is currently working on funding programs that address gender parity and representation in life science entrepreneurship, support of capital (equipment) infrastructure and increasing translational research in big data, women’s health, novel therapeutics delivery and other pressing life science sectors.

Position Description:

  • Support the Center's administration of funding programs. Examples may include:
    • Administrative review of applications
    • Supporting review meeting logistics
    • Aiding post-award management
    • Working with team to execute coaching sessions
    • Collecting & analyzing deliverables and reporting from previous awardees to maintain tracking of the portfolio
  • Optimize and maintain online application process for research programs in grant management system
  • Create process workflows in data management systems to extract data and assists with reimbursement process for program awardees
  • Assist with event coordination, press announcements, and industry conferences. Examples may include:
    • Compiling outreach lists for targeted communication
    • Drafting language for content and messaging
    • Drafting content for PowerPoint slides, Word documents, webpages, and other materials for internal and external use
  • Communicate with program applicants, industry stakeholders, and government officials
  • Manage scheduling for Industry team activities, some of which may include: meetings, company pitches, coaching sessions, and external events
  • Research and analyze information for new strategic investment programmatic offerings to support the life sciences in Massachusetts

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Academic coursework or relevant work experience in life sciences, engineering and business
  • An advanced degree in life sciences is preferred
  • Comfortable communicating internally and externally in a professional manner
  • Competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with Airtable, NetSuite, and Submittable software is preferred
  • Desire to engage in process optimization

  • Car is preferable (free parking available)
