Chief Advancement Officer

Description

NAYA Family Center seeks an experienced development leader to be our first Chief Advancement Officer. NAYA is one of Portland, Oregon’s oldest and most respected nonprofits and is a model for urban Native-serving organizations across the country.

This is a robust leadership position with an exciting portfolio of responsibilities. The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) is a member of the executive leadership team, reporting to the CEO and leading a high functioning team of development and communications professionals.

NAYA has a large and involved community and a history of successful event-based fundraising. From this strong foundation, the Chief Advancement Officer will grow our corporate and individual giving, increase major gifts and monthly giving, and establish a legacy program. The CAO will have the appropriate resources needed to build a thriving development operation.

NAYA offers an exceptional benefits package, including free medical, dental and vision insurance for employees (and affordable care for family), 401(k) retirement plan with 6% match, paid vacation and paid holidays. This is a hybrid role, working up to 2 days/week from home after onboarding is complete.

Starting salary is commensurate with experience.

Who You Are

  • You are a fundraising professional with at least five years of experience in development. CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) certification is preferred but not required.
  • You have experience with major gifts, legacy gifts, corporate giving, and foundation grants.
  • Ideally, you have three years of experience leading a team.
  • Ideally, you have lived or work experience in the Native community. If you don’t have this experience, you will need to commit to learning Native history and culture while you are in this role.
  • Ideally, you have experience with capital campaigns of $3 to 5M.
  • You are a skilled writer and creative storyteller.
  • You are a strategic thinker. You can shift easily between big picture planning and checking the details for an event.

What You'll Do

  • Serve on the executive leadership team, providing organization-wide leadership and strategic planning.
  • Partner with the CEO, CFO, and Board of Directors to develop and implement annual work plans and budgets aligned to NAYA’s strategic plan.
  • Lead the Board’s Fundraising Committee, engaging Board members in donor cultivation and relationship building.
  • Provide strong and supportive leadership to a team of six experienced communications and development staff. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation and accountability on your team.
  • Develop and execute fundraising strategies that exceed our $2.5M annual goal
  • Expand corporate and individual giving, including major gifts, legacy giving and our monthly donor program.
  • Lead the strategy and execution of our two major fundraising events, NAYA Gala and Many Nations Academy Student Showcase. Engage consultants as needed.
  • Oversee captivating, mission-focused storytelling and content creation for all external communications tools including the website, social media, newsletters, videos, and print materials
  • Serve as NAYA’s primary media liaison, overseeing press releases and conducting interviews.
  • Align communications strategies between the NAYA Action Fund (c4) and Family Center (c3).
