Job Description

For the Student Nurse Internship Program, we are seeking nursing students that have an expected graduation date of December 2025 or Spring 2026.

Please note - If you have an expected graduation date in August 2026, December 2026 or Spring 2027, consider applying to our Student Nurse Externship instead.

The Northwestern Medicine Student Nurse Internship (SNI) presents a valuable opportunity for nursing students to partner with a nurse preceptor to develop critical thinking skills and to develop a smooth transition in clinical practice upon graduation. 

The SNI program is an 8-week paid summer internship at our participating Northwestern Medicine Hospital locations. This program provides nursing students entering their first or second semester of their final and/or senior year (at the start of the internship on May 28, 2024) a chance to be part of our Interprofessional Relationship-Based Care Practice Model in which we integrate our NM Values of Patient First, Excellence, Integrity & Teamwork. It gives Caregivers and Care Partners the opportunity to create & nurture relationships with patients, family, community, colleagues and self. This is accomplished through a caring and healing environment, teamwork within a professional practice environment, striving for ultimate patient safety and quality outcomes and Interprofessional collaboration in both Patient Care and Clinical Research.

The Student Nurse Intern’s (SNI) tentative responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Uphold the mission, vision and values of Northwestern Medicine which include Patients First, Excellence, Teamwork & Integrity.
  • Mandatory attendance at the SNI and hospital orientation.

Successful Student Nurse Interns will receive an employment offer at the conclusion of their 8-week internship. 

Program Dates (mandatory full-time 8 week commitment):

Application Due Date: January 24, 2025

Start Date: May 28, 2025

End Date: July 22, 2025

Hours:

Your hours will be scheduled with your Patient Care Manager and aligned with your assigned preceptor, which may include:

  • Day or Night Shift
  • 8 or 12 hour shifts
  • Some Weekend shifts
  • No holidays or overtime

    • Huntley Hospital (Huntley, IL)
    • Kishwaukee Hospital (DeKalb, IL)
    • Lake Forest Hospital (Lake Forest, IL)
    • Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital (Wheaton, IL)
    • McHenry Hospital (McHenry, IL)
    • Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago, IL)
    • Palos Hospital (Palos Heights, IL)
    • Valley West Hospital (Sandwich, IL)
    • Woodstock Hospital (Woodstock, IL)
       
  • Tentative units participating in the 2025 SNI program are as follows; be sure to select your desired units in the application in order of preference. (We cannot guarantee a match, however, this is taken into consideration):
    • Cardiac
    • Emergency Department
    • Float Pool
    • ICU
    • MedSurg
    • Neuro
    • NICU
    • Oncology
    • Operating Room
    • Ortho
    • Outpatient
    • Pediatrics (limited locations)
    • Rehabilitation
    • Women's Health (L&D, Mother/Baby)

Qualifications

Required:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited professional ADN / BSN nursing program and entering their final and/or senior year of college. (Only BSN students accepted at the NMH location)
  • Students must graduate no later than June of the calendar year following completion of the SNI program. 
    • Graduation date of either late Summer 2025, December 2025 or Spring 2026.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS Provider certification is required.
  • Reliable, flexible and punctual with schedules.
