Department of Public Safety Standards and Training

Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Instructor (Public Safety Training Specialist 1) – multiple part-time positions available

This recruitment is for multiple, limited-duration, part-time positions located in Salem, OR (4190 Aumsville Hwy SE), this position is not represented by a union. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies.

What you will be doing:

Instructors will be facilitating pre-designed coursework and/or activities. Creating and adapting personal delivery methods, considering the context of public safety and the training curriculum.  Coach and evaluate course participants regarding their achievement of learning outcomes. Prepares, utilizes, and maintains training equipment. Ensures safety practices and protocols are followed.

About DPSST:

The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) oversees the development of professional standards and the delivery of quality training for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole and probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers. DPSST is also the regulatory agency that enforces employment and training standards for the above-listed public safety disciplines and licenses proprietary security managers, security contractors and officers, polygraph examiners, and private investigators.

  • Instructors who live more than 75 miles from the Academy and teach more than one day per week will be reimbursed for mileage for one round trip in addition to lodging and meal expenses. Exceptions may be authorized with prior supervisory approval.

Minimum Qualifications:

A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience relevant to the instructional assignment and/or in accordance with ORS 181.610 through 181.690. Typically, this experience is in the area of public safety (law enforcement officers, adult and youth corrections officers, parole and probation officers, fire service professionals, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers). Experience must have included delivering structured training sessions or on-the-job training.

Special Qualifications for SFST:

To be considered for the SFST position, applicants must be an Oregon Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor in good standing and/or a certified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Instructor. This role will primarily involve work in a skills-based environment.

Note: You do not need to have all of these qualities to be eligible for this position.

  • Experience adapting with flexibility and ease to changing priorities to meet organizational needs and goals.

  • Ability to perform work in a highly professional manner despite daily challenges.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the adult learning theory.

  • Proven track record conducting effective, safe, and compliant DUII arrests.

  • Well-versed in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing.

  • Application of instructional methods, training techniques, and collaborative training activities.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing principles and practices of adult learning in a training setting.

  • Certification as a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and/or Drug Recognition Expert Instructor by time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to those who possess law enforcement experience in the subject area within the last 5 years.

Additional Requirements:

Successful candidates for this position will be subject to a computerized criminal history check.  Adverse background information will be reviewed and could result in the withdrawal of a conditional job offer or the termination of employment.
