Optical Systems Engineer - Robotics

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Optical Systems Engineer to own our company camera system development. This opportunity will play a role in maintaining and advancing our current production camera architecture, as well as co-developing next generation camera hardware for all data capture platforms. The Optical Systems Engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Product, Software Engineering, and Hardware design to deliver best in class camera systems that fuel Simbe’s growth.


Key Responsibilities
  • Optimize Optical and Imaging Systems: Troubleshoot and refine existing optical and imaging systems to improve functionality and performance.
  • Prototype and Component Development: Design, build, and test prototypes to validate optical designs, while developing and optimizing camera components such as lenses, sensors, and image processing algorithms for both mobile and non-mobile device applications.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, to integrate camera systems into robotic platforms. Work with mechanical design teams to support integration of camera systems. Partner with computer vision and machine learning teams to develop and optimize algorithms for advanced imaging solutions.
  • Build and Maintain Software Stack: Program MIPI camera drivers for the Nvidia Jetson hardware and software stack. Design and optimize imaging pipelines and camera architectures for performance and scalability. 
  • Advance Imaging Systems and Technologies: Research and implement cutting-edge technologies, including 3D imaging and depth sensing, while applying deep knowledge of color science, image quality metrics, autofocus, and exposure to enhance overall system performance.
  • Drive Software-Enhanced Performance: Work with image processing software to analyze and enhance imaging performance.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in C or C++ required with experience in low level programming (Python and ROS experience a plus but not required)
  • Proven experience in camera system design and development, including mobile device or automotive camera modules.
  • Deep understanding and hands-on experience in developing CSI/MIPI camera drivers and systems.
  • Extensive experience working with cameras and capture architectures leveraging Nvidia platforms., ROS, or similar programming languages.
  • Experience developing camera systems leveraging GMSL/FPDLINK interfaces.
  • Strong knowledge of imaging principles, optical components, and system integration.
  • Strong understanding of color science and image quality metrics.
  • Experience with 3D imaging and depth-sensing technologies.
  • Expertise in using image processing software to analyze and optimize imaging performance.
  • Collaborative mindset with experience working in cross-functional teams to integrate optical, electronic, and software components seamlessly.
  • Self-learner with strong drive to widen their technical knowledge base and an ability to work independently under minimal supervision


$170,000 - $200,000 a year
The base salary offered is based on market location, and may vary further depending on individualized factors for job candidates, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to those same considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity compensation, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
