Staff Software Engineer, Vessel Performance Modeling

Sofar Ocean is a pioneering company dedicated to connecting the world's oceans via an extensive network of marine weather sensors to support sustainability and climate impact efforts. They are seeking a Staff Software Engineer skilled in vessel performance modeling to lead development of scalable, hybrid physics and data-driven systems aiding decarbonization and maritime safety.

Skills

Strong programming skills in Python and a system-level language such as C++ or Rust.
Experience designing and owning large-scale modeling or simulation pipelines in noisy data environments.
Ability to balance scientific rigor with practical engineering constraints.
Excellent communication skills to explain complex systems across disciplines.

Responsibilities

Architect and engineer scalable vessel performance modeling systems integrating hydrodynamics, engine data, weather, and operational factors.
Set technical strategy and collaborate with Product teams to shape impactful modeling directions.
Develop hybrid models combining physical simulations, machine learning, and observational ship data.
Ensure models are production-ready, well-tested, explainable, and integrated into customer-facing applications.
Mentor team members and establish best practices balancing physical modeling, numerical methods, and system reliability.

Education

Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in physics or natural sciences.
