Sr. Staff Back-end Engineer, Data - job 1 of 2

Coupang's AI+Data Platform team builds and operates the data infrastructure that powers search, pricing, logistics, streaming content, and experimentation across the company. We are seeking a seasoned Sr. Staff Back-end Engineer focused on data platforms to lead architecture, design highly scalable data services, and drive adoption of modern data and ML tooling across engineering and analytics stakeholders.

Skills

Deep knowledge of data infrastructure and analytics platforms
Strong data modeling and SQL proficiency
Familiarity with data science tools and ML lifecycle concepts (training, validation, inference)
Experience with large-scale distributed systems and performance tuning
Proven track record deploying and operating cloud-native services (AWS and/or GCP)
Experience designing data ingestion, transformation, and serving pipelines
Understanding of experimentation methodologies (A/B testing, multivariate testing)
Software engineering fundamentals: version control, CI/CD, production-quality code
Good written and verbal communication; ability to present technical topics to non-technical audiences
Experience with containerization and orchestration (containers, serverless, Kubernetes)

Responsibilities

Lead architectural design and technology selection for core data platform services and components
Evolve analytical ecosystems to enable advanced data capabilities including data lakes, pipelines, and GenAI workflows
Drive technical decisions across systems, services, algorithms, operations, and processes
Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to produce detailed designs and implement end-to-end features
Partner with internal clients (MLEs, BAs, Data Engineers, product teams) to gather requirements and promote platform adoption
Own reliability, scalability, and performance tuning for services serving millions of users
Design and improve experimentation capabilities (A/B testing, statistical analysis) for product decisions
Promote best practices in CI/CD, cloud operations, observability, and incident response

Education

BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
