About the Department

Student Counseling (SC) is a unit within Student Wellness, which is a part of Campus and Student Life. SC provides mental health care to eligible students and their eligible dependents. Mental health services include: diagnostic assessments; crisis assessment and intervention; individual, couples, and/or group psychotherapy; medication management; academic skills counseling; and referral services. SC staff provides consultation to University of Chicago faculty, staff, and administrators, and outreach/education to the campus community. In its care for students, SC employs a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, supports a psychology training program, and serves as a training rotation site for psychiatry residents.


Job Summary

Under the guidance and direction of the Associate Director of Clinical Services and Director of Mental Health Services (MHS), the individual in this position will focus approximately 60% time on clinical access management and approximately 40% time on provision of clinical mental health services. The clinical access management portion of the position will include the coordination of the number and distribution of initial appointments across clinician schedules and hours of operation to address the needs of students and clinical staff. Other access points under the purview of this position could include on-call coverage and emergency services (daytime and night/weekend) as well as supporting the MHS leadership in review and management of TimelyCare and ProtoCall services.

Responsibilities

  • Manages workflows and scheduling of initial clinical appointments and general clinical counseling operations. 

  • Manages and supports timely access including developing innovative, efficient models and solutions to address student need/demand and staffing capacity, including testing and evaluating the models.

  • Leads development of policies and procedures related to access and ensures appropriate compliance with policies. 

  • Functions as a liaison to the wellness coordinators (front desk and call center staff).

  • Works with Associate Director of Clinical Services to run reports and manage wait times proactively.

  • Oversees therapy schedules and on-call coverage, including crisis services. Provides back-up on-call coverage, daytime and night time/weekend, as needed.

  • Serves on the Mental Health Services Leadership team and contributes to overall oversight and management of Mental Health services and programs.

  • Provides direct clinical services, including goal-focused, time-limited individual, couples, and group psychotherapy.

  • Provides emergency and crisis intervention services including scheduled daytime coverage and limited nighttime/weekend on-call coverage.

  • Conducts clinical diagnostic evaluation and assessment of patients.

  • Maintains timely and complete electronic documentation as appropriate.

  • Provides consultation, training, and outreach to members of the University of Chicago community both during and after hours.

  • Participates in clinical and administrative staff meetings as appropriate.

  • Provides clinical supervision of trainees, as needed and as appropriate.

  • Provides breadth and depth of experience in the planning, implementation, assessment, delivery and administration of the University's Student Counseling Services.

  • Ensures the provision of multidisciplinary mental health services that reduce barriers to learning and create opportunities for greater academic achievement and student success.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • PsyD/Ph.D in counseling/psychology or Master's in social work.

Experience:

  • Five to seven years post licensure in provision of clinical mental health services.
  • Experience in program development and evaluation of clinical services models.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision in a mental health care facility.
  • Clear evidence of interest and experience working with a wide range of diverse students' identities and needs, e.g., international, historically underrepresented or underserved students, LGBTQ identified students, and students with disabilities.

Certifications:

  • License in Professional Counseling/Psychology/Social Work.
