Williamsburg Adventures is seeking passionate outdoor and leadership mentors to guide students through enriching experiences in our Outdoor and Leadership Adventures courses across designated locations in Arizona.

The Outdoor Adventures course is an in-person, experiential PE class offered in partnership with Williamsburg Academy for students in grades 6–12. Participants engage in a variety of hands-on activities such as rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, skiing, survival skills, first aid, outdoor games, and more, all while earning PE credit.

The Leadership Adventures course focuses on developing students’ leadership abilities through immersive, real-world experiences. Students earn elective leadership credit by participating in activities such as visiting museums and colleges, going on field trips, completing service projects, and practicing leadership through simulations and group challenges.

•This position will start at the beginning of June.

Adventure Leads will be responsible for the following:

Facilitate Transformational Learning Experiences

Leads play a key role in transforming each adventure into a meaningful, growth-centered experience for students. Responsibilities include:

•Infusing Meaning into Adventures: Leads are expected to build in transformational experiences, reflective touchpoints, and guided discussions throughout each adventure.

•Training & Preparation: Williamsburg Adventures will provide training on our proven framework for creating impactful, purpose-driven experiences.

•Attendance at all online Friday trainings is required. A full training schedule will be shared before the school year begins.

•Facilitating Reflection: Leads will offer thought-provoking context before and during each adventure and facilitate meaningful reflection through one-on-one conversations, group discussions, debriefs, and more.

•Coordinating Adventures: Leads are responsible for organizing and facilitating hands-on adventures. While they don’t need to be experts in every activity, they should coordinate with local partners (e.g., booking a rock climbing gym) to ensure high-quality, safe experiences.

Planning & Logistics for Site-Specific Adventures

•Local Adventure Coordination: Leads are responsible for planning and executing 10 adventures per semester in their assigned region. Events are scheduled on predetermined Fridays, typically between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and run 2–4 hours in length.

Types of Adventures:

•Outdoor Adventures may include hiking, climbing and rappelling, kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding, outdoor games, first-aid training, self-defense, ice skating, snowshoeing, skiing, and winter survival skills.

•Leadership Adventures may include museum visits, service projects, field trips, college tours, simulations, and interactive leadership activities.

•Event Approval: All proposed events must be submitted to and approved by Williamsburg Adventures in advance to ensure alignment with program goals and standards.

Logistics & Budgeting

•Vendor Coordination: Leads will make all necessary logistical arrangements, including scheduling vendors and managing payments. A company credit card will be provided for approved expenses.

•Expense Reporting: Leads are required to submit receipts and reports using Abacus by the scheduled deadlines. All expenses are reviewed monthly.

•Budget Management: Adventures must be planned within the approved semester budget.

On-Site Leadership

•Event Leadership: Leads serve as the primary facilitator at each event, providing direction to Trail Guides and volunteers and ensuring a smooth, safe, and engaging experience.

•Professional Presence: Leads are expected to build and maintain trust with students, parents, and team members by modeling professionalism, preparedness, and integrity.

•Timely Arrival: Leads must arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of each adventure to ensure proper setup and readiness.

Ensure Safety of Assigned Participants

•Student Safety: Leads are responsible for the safety and well-being of all students from the time of drop-off until they are picked up.

•First Aid Preparedness: Leads must carry basic first aid supplies and maintain up-to-date medical waivers, emergency contact information, and first-aid resources for all participating students. They are expected to provide on-site first aid as needed.

•Incident Reporting: All safety incidents must be documented and reported to the Adventures Program Director. In the case of a serious emergency, the LAU Executive Director must also be notified.

•Attendance & Accountability: Leads are required to take attendance at the beginning of each event and remain aware of every student’s location throughout the duration of the adventure.

Communicate about Site-Specific Adventure Details

•Communicate details of each adventure to all participants, parents, and leaders within an established communication rhythm.

•Coordinate with the Adventures Coordinator as needed.

•Post pictures after each adventure for parents and students.

Academic Coursework and Credit, where applicable

•Set up the course in Canvas each semester by the predetermined deadlines.

•Track that student waivers and medical histories are completed BEFORE the first adventure (students who do not complete these may not participate).

•Verify student completion of adventure reports prior to the adventure.

•Track attendance at each adventure in SIS.

•Work with the Adventures Program Director to assign grades in Canvas and SIS.

•Contact students and parents as needed.

•A 24-hour turnaround for any communication with colleagues, parents and students is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years or older to be considered for this position.
  • Valid and current driver’s license
  • Outdoor and leadership experience
  • Experience working with students in grades 6-12
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification
  • Excellent administrative skills (planning, organizing, communication)Ability to:Provide transformational mentoring to youth
  • Be vulnerable and authentic
  • Show energy and enthusiasm for being in the outdoors and challenging oneself in various settings
  • Pass background check
  • Leads must be able to use various programs (SIS, Canvas, Zoom. Asana, Abacus, google suite), you will be trained on these

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in similar leadership and outdoor programs.
  • Experience working with students in grades 6-12.

Physical Abilities

  • This position requires physical agility and stamina.
  • Walking, hiking, running, standing, lifting, and bending will be a routine part of this position.
  • Employees will need to be able to keep visual cues on students and be able to hear them.
  • Leads must have the physical ability to facilitate and lead students safely on adventures in various settings.

Compensation & Schedule

  • Pay rate is $9,000 per school year.
  • $500 stipend, a portion dedicated to mileage.
  • This position will start June 1, 2025, for the 25/26 school year.
  • Adventures are held on 10 predetermined Fridays each semester throughout the geographical region, along with some required flexible remote work throughout the week.
  • Adventure and semester setup takes up to 20 hours before the semester starts. 
  • Training will be held before the semester's start and will be 20 hours maximum.
  • This is a part-time position, 8 - 10 hours per week, with most of the hours taking place on Adventure Fridays during normal school hours. 
  • The remainder of the 10-hour maximum is flexible throughout the week. It will include required trainings that are typically under 2 hours on predetermined Fridays when an adventure is not scheduled.
