If HR sees it as an integrity concern, they might escalate—but they also might just note it internally and move on. Depends on the company culture.
If they haven’t rescinded yet, that’s a good sign. Still, start applying again to hedge your bets.
Even if this one doesn’t pan out (and fingers crossed it does), it won’t be the end. You clearly have enough skill to get the offer in the first place. That means something. Take a breath. Keep moving. You’re not done yet.
You’re not the first person to tweak job titles. Recruiters literally encourage resume tailoring all the time, just usually with a bit more finesse. Here’s the good news: if the experience aligns, and you didn’t invent companies or degrees, some employers might overlook the discrepancy, especially if you were transparent when they asked.
You already admitted it, so what’s done is done. Start applying again just in case, but don’t assume it’s over unless they tell you it is some companies care, some don’t. You gambled, now breathe and prepare for both outcomes
Been in your shoes, friend. I did something similar early in my career—tweaked titles for “alignment.” HR flagged it, asked me to clarify, and I just came clean and explained the context.
Lying is never to answer unfortunately there’s not much advice to give people tend to listen to social media saying loud your résumé and then it backfires my suggestion come clean and own up and say maybe you just got it wrong and learn from this and don’t do it anymore, but let this be a lesson to you to always be honest
I messed up badly and now I am freaking out.
I changed some job titles on my resume to match the job I applied for. Stuff like turning Customer Success into Event Marketing and Brand Marketing into Growth Marketing. I also left out my current company.
I got the offer, signed everything, and thought it was behind me. But then the background check came back and it showed my real titles. I basically had to admit it when they asked.
My start date is still a few weeks away and I have no idea if they are going to pull the offer. I keep refreshing my email every two minutes.
Should I assume the worst and start applying again? Has anyone else dealt with this before? What happens if they ask for paystubs or other proof?
Would appreciate advice. I already know I screwed up, no judgment needed.
