What Would You Do?
HR just hit me with the wildest (and probs illegal) question

“Are you planning to have kids” is one of the top illegal questions they train HR NOT to ask. if she’s saying it casually, she’s done it before
Honestly, even if it’s a red flag and you don’t take the offer, you should still document it. HR folks asking stuff like that is how entire cultures stay toxic
if it’s a big company, I’d seriously consider reporting to someone above her or through a formal HR complaint. even if you don’t want the job anymore, this needs to be on record
you did the right thing by saying you weren’t comfortable. they’re counting on people being too stunned to object. wild that she doubled down instead of backpedaling
final round for a senior dev role. everything was going super smooth—great vibes, fair comp, solid convos. then right before wrapping, HR goes: “just one more thing… are you planning to have kids in the next few years?”
I legit thought I misheard. Asked her to repeat it and she doubled down like it was a totally normal thing to ask. told her I wasn’t comfortable answering that. she seemed shocked I pushed back.
I left feeling super weird about the whole thing. anyone else had something like this in tech lately? should I report it or nah?
