Position Summary
This part-time position (approximately 24-28 hrs./week at $15/hr.) was created in partnership with Louisiana State University, School of Renewable Natural Resources, to support nest box monitoring and K-12 learning in the region. It is ideally suited for a current undergraduate student at Louisiana State University studying wildlife management, ornithology, ecology, biology, or a similar field, but may consider applications with various backgrounds.
Under the supervision of Audubon Delta’s Director of Conservation Science, the Avian Intern will demonstrate and gain skills in field survey methods, data collection and entry protocols, and have opportunities to intimately study charismatic bird species, including the Prothonotary Warbler. Training will be provided in field monitoring methods, data entry protocols, and bird banding. This position will work alongside Audubon staff, volunteers, and with graduate students at Louisiana State University.
In addition, the avian intern will collaborate with LSU’s AgCenter Youth Development 4-H Youth Wetlands Program by co-creating a curriculum for 4H camp participants. The intern will help teach this camp course upon the culmination of their internship. In developing the curriculum, the intern will help provide real world data and their field experiences that youth can evaluate to learn about birds and their role in the ecosystem and serve as a liaison between the scientific community and the students.
This position is remote to the Baton Rouge, LA location.

Essential Functions
Intern Responsibilities and Learning Objectives
Monitor nests at boxes across about 15 sites in the greater Baton Rouge area, which include a mix of forested wetlands (i.e., swamp forests), bottomland hardwood forests, and similar habitats.
Search for nests of target species (Carolina Wrens, Carolina Chickadees, and Prothonotary Warblers).
Collect fecal samples from nestlings.
Resight color-banded birds.
Assist in the banding of focal species.
Record field data and input into an online database, MS Excel, and Google Drive spreadsheets.
Collaborate with 4-H Youth Wetlands program staff to develop a camp curriculum.
Participate in the teaching of a 4-H Louisiana Outdoor Science and Technology camp from July 31 to August 3.
We anticipate that 70% of the responsibilities will be field-based and the other 30% will be office- and laboratory-based.

Intern Schedule:
A typical schedule would be Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, but may vary slightly because of weather and other logistical constraints, such that some work on weekends may be necessary.

May 12th, 2025, and projected end date is August 8th, 2025.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will be an undergraduate student at Louisiana State University studying wildlife management, ornithology, ecology, biology, or a related field. Applicants with B.S. degrees or currently studying at other universities will also be considered.
Candidate should be willing to live and work in the greater Baton Rouge, LA area; housing is not provided.
Must be willing to work outside under physically demanding conditions (hot, humid, biting insects, spider webs, swampy conditions).
Excellent interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills.
Must have strong organizational skills and great attention to detail.
Must be comfortable interacting with the public and staff of multiple partner organizations.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Excel and Word are desired.
Must properly maintain field equipment and keep supplies and materials organized.
