Mechanical Design Senior Engineer

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities

  1. Develop new thermal mechanical technologies by researching and developing concepts, initial prototypes, performing functional and reliability tests, and transferring of technology to high volume production.
  2. Perform analysis to determine if specifications are realistic and estimate risk exposure: thermal dynamics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), thermal / mechanical finite element analysis (FEA), mean time between failure (MTBF) and failure modes and effect analysis (FMEA), or other mathematical models.
  3. Participate or manage in all development phases of assigned projects, including requirement definition, design, test, integration, deployment and support.
  4. Ability to develop and maintain project requirements, specifications, detailed plans, budgets, and ROI.
  5. Track the progression of the projects to insure on-time completion and delivery while adhering to the product development processes. 
  6. Research and verify the performance and reliability of new vendor components.
  7. Work cross functionally with electrical, software, vision, LAB technicians locally, in Germany and Switzerland, and with remote satellite centers in Malaysia, Korea and Taiwan.   
  8. Interface directly with operations, sales and customers as well as other Cohu Businesses as required.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibility: 

  1. Provide work leadership and training to lower level technical or professional employees.
  2. Assigned responsibility to supervise lower-level engineering personnel during project execution.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Education/Training: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.  Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience:  Minimum of eight or more years of experience in mechanical and thermal engineering design and analysis with strong emphasis on heat transfer, fluids, and structural analysis. 
  • Skills/Technical Requirements
  • Must have excellent numerical analysis and mathematical modeling skills.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks/Cosmos and practical experience with engineering documentation procedures; concept layouts, detail drawings, fabrication specifications, bills of materials, etc.
  • Experience developing simplified models of engineering systems in Matlab, Octave or other engineering software and using these models to characterize and improve designs.
  • Knowledge of good engineering practices and standards such as geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Knowledge of semiconductor packages, manufacturing and processes related to the final test development cycle. 
  • Above-average knowledge of MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Project
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to give direction to engineers, designers and drafters.
  • Good presentation skills are required. Must be able to tailor presentations to the correct audience, such as product management, fellow engineers, customers, etc..
  • Ability to process data acquisition output from laboratory experiments or from systems in the field.

 

Job Conditions/Physical Demands: 

  • Domestic and international travel is required up to 25%. 
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at the computer workstation. 
  • Work at times in lab environment with constant or intermittent noise. 
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs., occasional exertion.
