BIW Lead Engineer

As a BIW (Body-in-White) CAD Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and development of body structure components for automotive applications. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, and CAE, to ensure efficient and cost-effective solutions that meet performance and safety requirements.

Responsibilities include:

  • 3D CAD Design & Modeling of BIW components using software like CATIA V5.
  • 2D Drawing & GD&T application for manufacturing feasibility.
  • Develop lightweight and crashworthy BIW structures.
  • Work on welded assemblies, press-formed panels, extrusions, and castings.
  • Ensure DFM (Design for Manufacturing) & DFA (Design for Assembly) principles.
  • Collaborate with CAE, tooling, and manufacturing teams to optimize designs.
  • Work with suppliers on material selection and manufacturing processes (e.g., stamping, joining techniques).
  • Ensure compliance with automotive standards (e.g., Euro NCAP, FMVSS).
  • Support design reviews, FMEA, and problem-solving initiatives.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in BIW CAD design within the automotive industry.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA V5, ) and PLM tools .
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and supplier collaborations.
  • Knowledge of stamping, welding, riveting, and adhesive bonding processes.
  • Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) and technical drawings.
  • Understanding of crashworthiness, NVH, and structural durability considerations.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Proven experience in cost management, supplier negotiations, and product optimisation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with experience in DFMEA, PFMEA, and root cause analysis.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Experience with composites & aluminum structures (desirable).
  • Exposure to BIW cost reduction & weight-saving strategies (desirable).
  • Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, and automotive quality processes (desirable).
  • Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certification (desirable).
