About the Role

Reporting to the VP of Reference Content, the Publishing Director will lead the global books publishing program in Physical Science, Energy, Materials Science & Engineering within the Global Content Partners (GCP) Reference Content group. Our diverse content supports the Researchers & Librarians customer segment and Science Direct, along with print and third-party publisher (3PP) channels.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, developing, and collaborating with other PDs to lead the strategy and operational implementation of book content acquisition, development, and related partnerships.
  • Achieving team signings of over 600 new titles annually, meeting product, cost, and other established objectives.
  • Supporting and coaching for employee engagement, development, and success. Listening and respond to the team through formal (OfficeVibe, EOS) and informal communication channels. Facilitating a culture of engagement, purpose, and shared success.
  • Supporting a diverse, international team of over 28 colleagues and their development. Provide coaching and direction, manage and set annual objectives and check-ins, manage performance, support change management, and provide change leadership.
  • Developing, leading, and implementing program and team strategy; contribute to group-level strategy.
  • Partnering and consulting with the VP and peer-PDs, leading in developing or collaborating on commercial and go-to-market solutions.
  • Utilizing data, analytics, commercial, and financial acumen to ensure each proposal and the overall program delivers on value and meets financial goals.
  • Developing and lead team strategy, including but not limited to: oversight of proposals and proposal financials, portfolio strategy and commissioning plan approval, frequent program reviews and deep dive analysis, portfolio roadmap analysis, setting strategy to support Science Direct targets and objectives, ensuring alignment with wider business strategic goals (GCP, STMJ, RR and Researchers & Librarians), ensuring content is leveraged effectively on all relevant platforms, identifying, and pursuing new and innovative opportunities in the portfolio and segment.
  • Providing competitor and market knowledge and analysis; lead the program's competitive stance, anticipating, and responding to market changes.
  • Ensuring team content aligns with strategic priorities, including content transformation and 100% use of the Elsa authoring platform.
  • Tracking and report on progress and metrics for owned programs. Provide data and performance indicators analysis (revenue, usage, contribution to overall business performance, etc.) to recommend or support program-level and group decisions.
  • Leading one-off initiatives as agreed.
  • Supporting partners (Content Management, Commercial, Product, and Marketing) as needed.
  • Connecting the team to the broader business.

Requirements

  • Have a track record of innovation, problem-solving, delivery, and execution.
  • Have 5+ years of leadership experience in a matrix environment with domain expertise in STEM portfolios and/or education or research markets, along with portfolio and/or product development experience.
  • Display experience in operational planning, negotiating, developing, and contributing to strategy, and identifying and delivering innovative solutions to meet targets.
  • Have deep understanding of scholarly markets, ethics, and integrity.
  • Have interest in data and analytics and the potential for technology to improve outcomes.
  • Exceptional people leader with a coaching mindset and experience of engaging and motivating teams.
