Description

The Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) seeks a strategic higher education leader to develop and direct collaborative programs and provide operational management of our regional consortium. This individual will play a key leadership role in supporting our network of private institutions committed to excellence in residential liberal arts education. The Director will work closely with a small virtual team of ACS colleagues and engage with senior leaders across member campuses. This is a fully remote position, with some travel to member campuses and events required (approximately 10%).  

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Program Development & Management:  

  • Oversee the administration of ACS initiatives, such as the Mellon-funded ACS Academic Leadership Fellows Program, ensuring grant compliance and valuable engagement for participating institutions.   
  • Work with the President and team to design, launch, and staff collaborative programs that support ACS’s mission to advance excellence in residential liberal arts education.   
  • Build and leverage relationships with ACS member institutions to ensure input in program design and alignment with campus priorities and needs.  
  • Ensure regular evaluation and continuous improvement of ACS activities.

Operations Management: 

  • Support the President in developing strategies for resource allocation and long-term financial sustainability.   
  • Supervise ACS bookkeeping and finance manager. 
  • Monitor spending against budget, ensuring accountability and compliance. 
  • Manage day-to-day operations, including supporting team collaboration, project coordination, and communication across the virtual ACS team.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree and minimum of 7 years of experience in program management, preferably in higher education or a nonprofit setting.  
  • Demonstrated experience with grant administration and compliance.  
  • Strong management skills, including budget development and oversight.  
  • Proven ability to engage and collaborate with high-level stakeholders, including academic leaders and senior administrators.  
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.  
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic, remote work environment. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities faced by private higher education institutions in the South.  
  • Experience developing programs that promote teaching excellence, leadership development, or student success.
