The Blue Seal Engineering Foreman assists in the supervision of employees engaged in the operation and maintenance of steam generation, chilled water system and all the units it supplies along with the Power Plant equipment at the Old Bridge Division.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Blue Seal Engineering Foreman at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Steam Distribution:
- Manage the operation of two 150 HP and one 50 HP Cleaver Brooks boilers as well as one Caterpillar abuilent cooled steam generator.
- Confirm that the proper blow down of each boiler is achieved at the required interval.
- Direct the cleaning of fuel oil strainers and boiler fuel oil nozzles as usage requires.
- Ensure the proper handling of fuel deliveries and the fuel oil supply to boilers. Maintain the natural gas system in a safe and efficient manner.
- Maintain the proper chemical testing and water treatment to the feedwater and boilers.
- Ensure that the steam pressure needs of the Medical Center and Medical Arts Building are maintained at all times.
- Ensure that the scheduled PM for boilers and auxiliaries are performed properly.
- Maintain the proper flow and operation of all condensate stations including the operation of the D.A. tank in the Power Plant.
- Maintain the boiler burners at optimal operating efficiency at all times.
- Ensure that the power plant logs/ steam charts /water treatment logs and power plant logbook is completed properly.
- Check operation for compliance of safety regulations and maintain optimum standards of safety and fire prevention regulations among employees.
- Initiate the ordering of fuel, chilled water system chemicals, boiler chemicals and general repair supplies for upkeep of the boilers and auxiliary equipment with the authorization of the Plant Operations Manager.
- Diagnose/repair/recommend solutions to ensure that boilers and auxiliaries operate with limited down time.
- Control Chilled Water System:
- Direct the operation of the three chillers and the logging of temperatures and pressures.
- Direct the daily maintenance and operation of the three cooling water towers along with the chemical feeding of the condenser and chilled water.
- Maintain and the proper G.P.M. of chilled water to each chiller and the secondary chilled water system.
- Provide assistance to the contracting vendor to maintain proper winterizing and spring start up and emergency calls of the chillers.
- Diagnose / repair / recommend solutions for chilled water equipment not covered by contract vendors.
- Compressed Air, Medical Suction Unit and Plant Air Conditioning:
- Ensure the proper operation and supply pressure for the medical air system {compressors, regulators, dryers} including the maintenance, repairs and cleanliness of the units.
- Responsible for the proper operation of the 2 medical suction compressors and maintaining the required normal vacuum range, including the maintenance, repairs and cleanliness of the units.
- Responsible for the proper operation of the plant air compressor system including maintenance repairs and cleaning.
- Water Softener:
- Ensure the proper daily operation of the water softeners (< 4ppm hardness) by testing, regenerating, with proper salt level in brine tank and logging readings / maintain / repair / recommend solutions for proper operation of system.
- Domestic Hot/Cold Water System:
- Ensure the proper operation of the city water booster pumps to maintain 70-75 PSI. Repair/maintain/recommend solutions for the normal operation of the system.
- Ensure the normal operation of the domestic hot water system, maintain hot water at a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit maximum, through adjustment of temperature control valves. Also, repair / maintain / recommend solutions.
- Emergency Generator:
- Direct the weekly testing of the emergency generators and ensure top operational running condition is maintained at all times through preventive maintenance, weekly testing (under load).
- To maintain a generator running log of hours in operation, down time and repairs.
- Maintain current repair history records for all power plant equipment.
- Ensure that all Preventive Maintenance is completed on time and filed properly.
- Direct the daily operation of the power plant by scheduling shifts, having the proper equipment on line for the most efficient operation and initiating repairs to limit equipment down time.
- Carry out instructions of the Plant Operations Manager.
- Other:
- Shall initiate and recommend parts to be ordered, equipment overhauls and installations. Instruct and assign shifts for daily work assignments to all shift engineers as required or instructed by the Plant Operations Manager for an efficient and properly maintained power plant operation.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
- Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
- A minimum of four (4) years of boiler room experience or three (3) years of boiler room experience and one (1) year of experience in maintenance in addition to one (1) year of experience in refrigeration.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Blue Seal Stationary Engineer's License.
