Position: Lab Manager

PI: Yasmine Kanaan, Ph.D.

Location: Howard University Cancer Center, Washington DC.

Hiring period: 02/01/2025 – 01/31/2030

Job Description:

The lab manager (LM) will assist with the overall project management under the supervision of Dr. Yasmine Kanaan. The incumbent will be responsible for establishing communication and collaboration with key stakeholders and prepare materials for Howard University Institutional Review Board (IRB) review to facilitate enrollment and consent human subjects, administer study surveys, and collect specimens of study participants. His/her responsibility will also include coding data, maintain accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects as necessary and ensuring compliance with protocols, summarize interviews, and extract technical, medical, and/or behavioral information from institution or clinical records.

The LM should have a relevant experience in Molecular Cancer Biology/ Immunology and will be responsible for research planning including generating hypotheses, designing, and conducting experiments, data collection and analysis, and conducting thorough research literature reviews. The incumbent will oversee and maintain the research regulatory compliance with federal laws, IRB approval, and other sponsor and university specific requirements.

The LM will work with the primary investigator (Dr. Kanaan) to draft, publish, and present research data in scientific communications and conferences. The incumbent will aid in drafting the progress report and planning research strategies. He/she will aid in drafting the grant applications and budget planning of research activities.

Other required duties:

  • Maintaining good laboratory practice according to HU IRB policies.
  • Plan and perform research wet lab experiments as needed.
  • Maintain lab instruments and lab repository of samples.
  • The laboratory manager must be able to work precisely and structurally. While they usually work with several people in the lab, they must be able to work independently as well.
  • Develop and document experiment protocols and maintain sample records.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (PhD, MD, PharmD).
  • Strong research background and understanding of pathologies in oncology, immunology, and microbiology.
  • Excellent technical and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills.
