As an Engineer 1 supporting Developer Tools, you will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of critical tools and platforms used by Nordstrom’s engineering teams, including GitHub, GitLab, Vault CE, and Artifactory. You will be responsible for automating deployments, performing upgrades, patching, and administering these tools, while ensuring they remain highly available and secure. In addition, you will support CI/CD workflows and assist in optimizing the software development lifecycle for engineering teams. This position also requires participation in an on-call rotation to provide timely support for critical systems and tools.
This role is ideal for early-career engineers who are passionate about developer productivity, automation, and operational excellence. In this hybrid role, candidates must be available to work onsite at Nordstrom's headquarters in Seattle, WA a minimum of 3 days/week.
A Day in the Life...
Development & Automation:
Build, maintain, and optimize GitHub workflows, GitLab pipelines, and other CI/CD tools.
Automate infrastructure deployments and tool configurations using Terraform or similar IaC tools.
Write clean, maintainable code in Python and other object-oriented programming languages (e.g., Java).
Tool Administration & Maintenance:
Maintain secure and highly available developer tools, such as GitHub, GitLab, Vault CE, and Artifactory.
Perform regular patching, upgrades, and administration of developer tools to ensure reliability and security.
Monitor and improve system health and performance to meet operational SLAs.
Secrets Management:
Manage and secure secrets using tools like Vault CE and enforce secure coding practices.
Operational Support:
Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to developer tools and CI/CD pipelines.
Collaborate with engineering teams to improve developer workflows and ensure seamless integration with tools.
On-Call Rotation:
Participate in a shared on-call rotation to provide operational support for critical developer tools and platforms.
We’d Love It If You Have...
Technical Skills:
Hands-on experience with GitHub workflows and actions, and CI/CD tools.
Proficiency in Python and familiarity with another object-oriented programming language (e.g., Java).
Experience with Terraform for automated deployments and infrastructure as code (IaC).
Knowledge of secrets management tools (e.g., Vault CE) and secure coding practices.
Familiarity with administering tools like Artifactory, GitHub, GitLab, and Vault.
Basic knowledge of cloud technologies (e.g., AWS, GCP).
Ability to write unit tests, integration tests, and provide clean, reusable code.
Passion for utilizing GenAI to reduce manual process.
Tool Administration & Operational Support:
Experience managing and maintaining developer tools (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, Vault, Artifactory).
Ability to ensure high availability, security, and reliability of these platforms through proactive maintenance.
Familiarity with monitoring, telemetry, and alerting using tools such as NewRelic and Splunk.
Soft Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong collaboration skills and comfort working on team projects.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent work experience required.
