REPORTS TO: Deputy Regional Director

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May directly supervise interns, part-time staff, or consultants

LOCATION: San Francisco, CA

Grade/Class: Grade F, Exempt, PSA-Eligible

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

 

Assist the Deputy Regional Director and Regional Director in planning, developing, and implementing advocacy initiatives, program activities and services in the community to advance ADL’s mission within the assigned region. Respond to and review to the region’s work related to advocacy, coalition building and community outreach, communications, incident response, Jewish community engagement, law enforcement engagement, public-facing programming, and young leadership development. Assist the Deputy Regional Director and Regional Director in the administration of the office including office management, budget preparation and staff supervision where appropriate.

Responsibilities

Primary: 

  • Connect and conduct outreach with Jewish and non-Jewish communities to advance the mission of the ADL, with a primary focus on covering issues, incidents and matters related to northern California. May be assigned other areas within the Region as needed/appropriate. 
  • Respond to and resolve complaints of discrimination, antisemitic incidents and other civil rights issues.  Conduct in-depth fact-finding research, initiating contacts and developing sources as appropriate.  Coordinate with Policy Counsel as appropriate.  Ensure that required reports are maintained. 
  • Develop and implement community outreach including initiatives and joint ventures with elected leaders and diverse interfaith and cross-cultural organizations active within the region e.g., African-American, AAPI, LGBTQ+, Hispanic and Latino groups/Muslim leaders, Catholic scholars and other faith leaders. 
  • Implement ADL programs and projects, tailoring them to local community needs and issues.  Manage education and human relations programming. Conduct training sessions as applicable regarding the above-listed initiatives.  
  • Provide staff support and programming to lay-led committees which may include Civil Rights, Nominating, Executive, regional volunteer leadership programs (Regional Board and GLI young leaders) and others as assigned. 
  • Collaborate with the Director of Policy and division team on planning and execution of state-based legislation and local government initiatives.
  • Attend community events on behalf of ADL to promote public awareness of ADL’s mission and extend ADL’s reach throughout the Central Pacific Region.
  • Respond to inquiries from media and press outlets and from members of the public, demonstrating authoritative knowledge of ADL’s policies and positions and relevant local, national and world events.  Read, monitor and respond to media reports and opinion articles. 
  • Participate in government affairs activities, maintaining regular contact with state and local officials as well as with Jewish communal leaders and community members. Advocate for ADL issues in state and local legislature. 
  • Oversee assigned regional program staff and the programs for which they are responsible.   
  • Assist in the recruitment and supervision of office administrative support staff. Select and supervise interns. Ensure the smooth-functioning of the regional office in the absence of the Deputy Regional Director or Regional Director.   
  • May assist in budget preparation and general office management. 
  • Attend regular work commitments, meetings, functions and events in the San Francisco bay area and northern California.
  • Help oversee assigned interns and the programs for which they are responsible.

  • Prior experience with Salesforce preferred.
  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel). 
  • Ability to connect and communicate with diverse interfaith and cross-cultural communities. 
  • Ability to use social media and networking applications. 

  

Work Experience: 

  • Between five and six years of progressively responsible community outreach experience, including program and operational management.

  • Experience in public policy or advocacy related to bias, bigotry, racism or antisemitism strongly preferred.   
  • Experience in working with Jewish communal organizations, legal, legislative/government relations, civil rights advocacy, also a plus. 

  

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree equivalent experience plus additional related college courses or professional training

 

Work Environment:  

  • ADL is a hybrid environment; this role may require 3 days in the office.  

 

Compensation:  

  • This position has a salary range of $71,000 to $90,000. This salary range is reflective of a position based in San Francisco, CA. Please note that actual salaries are commensurate with experience and reflect the budget for a given position, and since ADL has a location-based compensation structure, there may be a different range for candidates in other locations. For an overview of our total rewards package, please visit https://www.adl.org/about/careers.
