Job Description

Integrated in the T&P (Technical and Performance) Canada team, the Technical Director is responsible for direction and execution of technical and performance aspects throughout the operation of Veolia Canada in Ontario. This includes :

  1. Technical support to operations
  2. Technical troubleshooting and resolution of issues
  3. Optimisation of current operations (through process optimisation and/or operational excellence)
  4. Project management
  5. Implementation of Process Safety Management best practices (facilitate Process Hazard Assessment/Hazop, Root Cause analysis, etc…)
  6. Due diligence and auditing of existing and new facilities, support growth strategy definition and support to business development

This individual must have a strong background in the technical field in the environmental business with experience in operations, knowledge of finance principles and project management. The position will also require management of some special projects such as capital expenditure projects.

This position must be located in the GTA (Toronto). Travel to other provinces may be necessary (expected to remain < 25% of the time).

The Canada business involves:

  • Anaerobic digestion of Organic Waste
  • Hazardous waste transfer stations and solidification
  • Hazardous water treatment (physico-chemical and 3 phase centrifuges)
  • Drinking water production and waste water treatment facilities
  • Sludge drying and pelletizing

Main Responsibilities: 

  1. Provide technical and performance support to the operation groups in Canada (mainly in Ontario) by supporting Operations and Asset Management teams to troubleshoot, optimize and improve the performance of current activities where identified.
  2. Realise regular visits on Veolia sites ( >50% of time ).
  3. Provide the overall direction and management of his/her assigned projects, including the assigned personnel, equipment, and subcontractors, applying proper and effective project management procedures and skills.
  4. Ensure the project or assignment is planned and coordinated according to the required schedule, with strict adherence to health and safety, quality and budget considerations.
  5. Support and animate the Process Safety Management community in Canada and apply best practices in PSM (facilitate Process Hazard Assessment/Hazop, Root Cause analysis, etc…)
  6. Provide technical mentoring, training and operational expertise to O&M employees.
  7. Participate in defining the long term strategy to develop the Canadian activities by bringing technical expertise to the business development team.
  8. Lead technical due diligences of new business acquisition or plant upgrades.
  9. Assist Business Development in preparation of estimates and procedures in planning of projects, financial estimates with a strong focus on operational efficiencies.
  10. Ensure technical quality and optimal health and safety in all aspects of job performance and compliance per all applicable local regulations and standards and Veolia standards and best practices.
  11. Actively participate in feedback and post-job evaluation of assigned projects.
  12. Complete and issue clear and rigorous technical reports.
  13. Other duties as directed.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Education/Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years experience in transversal technical functions and/or operational functions
  • Minimum of 5 years in an operational function (ex : operation manager, process engineer, commissioning manager…)
  • Strong operational and field experience
  • Experience in environmental field (wastewater, hazardous waste or solid waste activities)
  • Chemical Engineer. Ontario P. Eng certificate is a strong asset. or Bachelors of Science in Chemistry or Environmental studies

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Strong abilities to understand technical and process issues and define practical solution (analysis/problem solving/decision making).
  • Strong ability to explain complex technical/theoretical concepts to field operators.
  • Experience in communication with field employees, management of operations.
  • Ability to connect and communicate with technical peers in the company.
  • Ability to work and coordinate projects with other departments (IT, Finance, Business Development teams, etc…).
  • Strong knowledge of Process Safety Management standards.
  • Ability to facilitate PHA/HAZOP and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Strong project management, result oriented, performance and improvement oriented.
  • Experience in Operational Excellence implementation (5S, lean-Six Sigma or others methodologies).
  • Ability to foster teamwork and excellence in work coordination.
  • Strong and rigorous technical writing skills and ability to develop Excel complex spreadsheets.
  • Must be committed to the Veolia core values of integrity, openness and trust, accountability, and excellence through teamwork.
  • Required to have a valid driving licence.
  • Language skills for business in English. French speaking is a strong asset.

Work Environment: 

Permanent position, offered on a full-time basis, with schedules from Monday to Friday, day time. 

  • This position must be located in the GTA (Toronto).
  • Travels to others provinces may be necessary (expected to remain < 25% of the time).
  • Regular visits to our sites in Ontario.
  • Hybride work policy (office/remote).
  • Required to Travel in Canada and to the USA occasionally.
