Since 1911, Children’s of Alabama has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children. Ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Children’s serves patients from every county in Alabama and nearly every state. With more than 3.5 million square feet, it is one of the largest pediatric medical facilities in the United States. Children’s offers inpatient and outpatient services at its Russell Campus on Birmingham’s historic Southside with additional specialty services provided at Children’s South, Children’s on 3rd and in Huntsville and Montgomery. Primary medical care is provided in more than a dozen communities across central Alabama. Children’s is the only health system in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. It is a private, not-for-profit medical center that serves as the teaching hospital for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) pediatric medicine, surgery, psychiatry, research and residency programs. The medical staff consists of UAB faculty and Children’s full-time physicians as well as private practicing community physicians.

Regular employees scheduled to work 20 hours per week are eligible for the following benefits.

Medical

Children’s offers three health plans: Viva Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and Blue Cross Blue Shield Consumer Driven with a Health Savings Account. None of our health plan requires a Primary Care referral to see a specialist physician. We pay a significant portion of the monthly premiums.

Dental

Children’s offers Blue Cross Blue Shield Basic Dental plan and a Blue Cross Blue Shield Buy-Up Option.

Vision

Our vision plans are offered by EyeMed or VSP.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Children’s offers a Health Care Spending Account and a Dependent Care Spending Account. Employees may contribute pre-tax dollars to these accounts to cover qualified expenses that are usually paid out-of-pocket with after-tax dollars. Because employees do not pay Federal, State Income, or Social Security taxes on the money contributed to these accounts, their bring home pay is usually higher.

FINANCIAL SECURITY

Basic Term Life Insurance
Children’s provides all benefit eligible employees basic term life insurance equal to 2 times their base salary, up to $50,000. Employees may also purchase additional term life insurance at affordable group rates. Employee Supplemental Life, Spouse Life, and Dependent Life insurance options are available.

401k Plan
Children’s offers a 401k plan with a generous match of $.50 on the dollar up to 14% of your contributed salary. Participating employees choose from a wider variety of investment options offered through Fidelity Investments. Fidelity Investments even offers a family of funds that you don’t have to manage!

Financial Finesse
Through a partnership with Financial Finesse, employees can receive free financial guidance from a Certified Financial Planner. Whatever your financial dream, Financial Finesse can help make it a reality.

Long-Term Disability
For qualifying disabling illness or injuries that prevent you from working 90 calendar days or more, the LTD plan will pay a benefits of 60 percent of your base salary. Employees are eligible after 30 days of employment.

Voluntary Short-Term Disability
A voluntary Employee Paid STD plan coordinates with your EIB accrual to alleviate any gap in coverage when you experience a qualifying non-work related disability.

Supplemental Whole Life Insurance
In addition to providing death benefits to your designated beneficiaries, this life insurance also builds cash value that can be utilized while you are still living.

Critical Illness Insurance
Critical Illness insurance can help supplement major medical coverage by helping you pay the direct and indirect costs associated with a critical illness or event.

Long-Term Care Insurance
Offered by an independent broker that specializes in long-term care insurance and represents multiple brand name carriers.

Workman’s Compensation
Children’s offers insurance providing possible wage and medical benefits to employees injured in the course of employment.

Family Medical Leave
Children’s offers family medical leave in accordance with the Family Medical Leave Act.

TIME OFF

Paid Time Off
The Children’s Paid Time Off (PTO) bank combines vacation, holiday, personal and short-term sick time into one flexible plan. The PTO plan is flexible because it allows you to schedule time off away from work when it is important to you. The PTO plan also provides options such as Annual PTO Selling and PTO Donation.

Extended Illness Benefit
Children’s provides an Extended Illness Benefit to meet pay continuation needs during absences due to serious illness or maternity leave. Employees begin accruing EIB on their first day of employment. EIB can be taken for your own illness/maternity leave or the illness of your spouse, children or parents.

Onsite Massage Therapy
A licensed Massage Therapist is on campus weekly to provide employees discounted seated massage.

PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Tuition Reimbursement
After one year of employment, employees are eligible for tuition reimbursement. Fulltime employees can receive up to $2,500 per year, and part-time employees can receive up to $1,250 per year.

On-site Classes
Spanish, Business Math, Grammar, Medical Terminology and English classes are brought on-campus for employees.

Developmental Classes
Children’s Organizational Development team serves as a system-wide resource for the educational and development activities that promote excellence in performance and service.

FAMILY FOCUSED BENEFITS

Adoption Assistance
Regular, benefit eligible employees who have completed six (6) months of employment are eligible to participate in the program. Eligible employees may receive up to $5,000 per adoption or up to $7,000 per adoption if the child has special needs. Eligible employees may apply for reimbursements for up to 2 children.

Near & Dear Onsite Childcare
Near & Dear is an on-site center for children of Children’s employees. Located on Children’s campus, the center provides emergency back-up child care and mildly ill childcare for children ages 3 months to 12 years. The center is also available daily for new parents with infants ages 6 weeks to 3 months.

On-site Lactation Center
Children’s is very proud to offer lactation benefits to parents. The center provides: a relaxing atmosphere, pump equipment and supplies, and a resource center for families.

Children's is home to the state's only Level I pediatric trauma center, the only pediatric renal care center, the largest pediatric burn center in the Southeast and is one of the largest pediatric outpatient centers in the nation. Its specialty centers for the treatment of cancerdiabetes, sleep disorders, cystic fibrosis, immunodeficiencies, sickle cell disease, epilepsy, lung disease, kidney disease serve as the backdrop for learning and discovery for health care professionals dedicated to the care of children. The newly built Center for Pediatric Research and Innovation houses research space and a state-of-the-art education center. Children's is headquarters for the Alabama Poison Information Center (1-800-222-1222), the Child Safety Institute and a site-based school for long term patients that is accredited by the State Department of Education.

As a teaching and research hospital, Children's is a tremendous asset to the state and the southeast logistically. Nationally, the hospital is part of one of the major centers for medical research and has been a major contributor to medical science, ranking among the top ten pediatric departments in funding by the National Institutes of Health.
