ABOUT THE ROLE
At 3Degrees, we are committed to advancing a decarbonized future. One way we do this work is by originating, marketing, selling, and trading environmental commodities such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), Carbon Credits, and Clean Fuel Standard Credits. As a member of our Research and Analysis team within the Environmental Markets (EM) division, you’ll apply your analytical and strategic expertise, to conduct market analysis, develop supply and demand models, and track portfolio trends.
In this highly collaborative role, you’ll serve as a bridge between data analysis, trading strategies, and market insights. Your responsibilities will revolve around developing innovative forecasting tools, translating complex datasets into actionable insights, and playing a crucial role in shaping trading strategies. Your expertise will go beyond supporting the trading desk—you'll challenge conventional thinking, identify strategic gaps, and introduce innovative solutions to improve our trading performance.
This is a full-time opportunity within the 3Degrees Environmental Markets division located in Portland, ME and will report to the Manager, Market Analysis. Highly qualified candidates located within a commutable distance to our San Francisco, CA, Portland, OR, and New York, NY offices will also be considered. 3Degrees does not provide sponsorship and /or relocation assistance for non-nationals in any of our roles. Working closely with traders, regulatory affairs, and data management teams, you will play a key role in integrating market data across portfolios, ensuring accuracy, and driving market intelligence. You will provide key analytical insights that influence trading strategies and shape the direction of our environmental markets. Your role will focus on two main areas:

You are an analytical thinker with a deep passion for sustainability and renewable energy markets. With a strong foundation in data analysis and financial modeling, you excel at interpreting complex market trends and delivering actionable insights. Your ability to think strategically, coupled with a knack for problem-solving, allows you to proactively contribute to trading strategies and identify innovative solutions. You are extremely detail-oriented, and ready to take ownership of analytical work streams that inform critical trading decisions. You thrive in fast-paced environments where you can work both independently and collaboratively. We believe an individual with the following skills has the best opportunity for success in this role:
3+ years of professional experience developing statistical tools and complex fundamentals models, ideally in the North America renewable energy markets
Knowledge of other environmental markets, including renewable fuels and carbon compliance, as well as power markets, would be advantageous
Strong interest in financial markets, particularly commodity trading
Meticulous attention to detail, and skilled in identifying anomalies in large and intricate datasets
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment, balancing competing demands toward mutual goals
Excellent presentation and writing skills with the ability to communicate information succinctly to other team members
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; remain composed under pressure
Strong independent learning skills coupled with a successful track record of self-driven analytical investigations
Self-motivated, with a genuine desire to accelerate the growth of environmental markets domestically and internationally
Advanced proficiency in Excel, Python, and Tableau required; working knowledge of other programming languages (e.g. VBA, SQL, R)
BA/BS degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent combination of professional experience and education
HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS
Within 30 days:
Gain a thorough understanding of North American energy markets, 3Degrees’ portfolio, and the trading team's objectives through onboarding assessments and participation in meetings.
Build meaningful relationships with stakeholders across trading, regulatory affairs, sales, and data management by attending at least 3 collaborative discussions or cross-functional meetings.
Provide at least two insights during weekly performance reviews and complete training on key reporting tools, including Tableau, Python, and Excel.
Within 90 days:
Take full ownership of routine reporting and performance reviews for the North America Trading team, ensuring timely and accurate delivery with minimal supervision.
Produce at least three actionable insights using Tableau, Python, and Excel, successfully integrating them into trading strategies with feedback from the trading team.
Deliver at least one preliminary supply and demand forecast model using third-party data, refining it with feedback from the Manager of Market Analysis.
Within 6 months:
Deliver at least three data-driven recommendations implemented by the trading team, establishing yourself as a primary source of analytical insight.
Identify and address strategic gaps or improvement areas in trading performance or market trends.
Lead at least two rounds of backtesting and refining proprietary models to enhance forecast accuracy, validated by the trading team.
Within 1 year:
Deliver and implement at least five strategic recommendations and establish yourself as a trusted thought partner for the trading team.
Achieve measurable trading accuracy and portfolio performance improvements through refined forecasting models and data-driven strategies.
Contribute to at least two cross-functional projects that enhance market insights and trading strategies, driving progress toward decarbonization goals.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The following compensation and benefits information is based on 3Degrees’ good faith estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future:
Compensation: The starting base salary for this position is $81,000-$104,000 in the US. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include location, role requirements, relevant prior experience and/or education, or particular skills and expertise
