ABOUT THE ROLE
At 3Degrees, we are committed to helping organizations worldwide achieve bold climate action through innovative renewable energy and decarbonization solutions. Our Contracts team is a pivotal strategic ally within the company, and we are seeking a passionate contracts professional to join our growth-minded, mission-driven legal team. In this cross-functional role, you will be a key player in our legal department, working closely with our Wholesale, Commercial, and Trade Operations teams to negotiate, draft, and manage contracts that are critical to our growth and mission.
You’ll take ownership of a high-volume contract pipeline, ensuring alignment with company policies and regulatory requirements while minimizing risk. As an integral contributor to our contracting process, you’ll have the opportunity to drive process improvements, develop templates and playbooks, and collaborate with teams across the organization. Your contracts expertise will be pivotal in ensuring the smooth execution of our projects as we continue to support global climate action.
This is a full-time position reporting to the General Counsel. Ideally, candidates will be based within a commutable distance of our San Francisco, California office, where you’ll enjoy a flexible hybrid work environment. Exceptional candidates based outside the listed location within the Western time zone will also be considered. WHAT YOU’LL DO
Your work will protect the company from unnecessary risks, strengthen relationships with counterparties, and ensure efficient transaction closures. In this role, you will be an integral contributor at all stages of 3Degrees’ high-volume contracting process. Key focus areas include:
Contract Management:
- Manage a high-volume contract pipeline efficiently and professionally from start to finish in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
- Draft, review, redline, and negotiate contracts and special provisions with precision to ensure alignment with company policies and regulatory compliance
- Ensure contracts are in compliance with the regulatory framework
Process Improvement:
- Develop and maintain contract templates and playbooks to streamline processes and ensure consistency
- Identify and drive efficiency projects across the company to improve processes and systems
Collaboration and Communication:
- Interface and collaborate daily with domestic and international employees and counterparties with a sense of professionalism and urgency
- Share company perspectives with colleagues at all levels to facilitate a cohesive and informed team environment
Customer and Stakeholder Management:
- Manage relationships with counterparties, clients, and internal team members, ensuring a high level of customer service and client satisfaction
- Respond to various audit requests and maintain compliance with regulatory and company standards
ABOUT YOU
You are a highly focused and conceptual thinker skilled at succinctly drafting and reviewing a variety of contracts. You possess a strong business-related educational background, ideally with a bachelor’s degree and/or completion of a legal studies or paralegal certificate. An organized and process-oriented mindset, proficient at completing assignments with limited or no guidance and continuously striving to find operational efficiencies. You enjoy managing various tasks and are comfortable sharing company perspectives with colleagues at all levels. You possess excellent business judgment and can professionally communicate with internal and external parties. The following experiences and skills would demonstrate your ability to be successful in this role:
Contract Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of extensive experience working on domestic and international commercial contracts with a strong preference for experience with environmental commodity market contracts and/or products
- Proficient in developing and maintaining contract templates and playbooks to streamline processes and ensure consistency
- Skilled in drafting contracts for new products or entering new regions, demonstrating adaptability and innovation
Interpersonal Skills:
- High emotional intelligence with the ability to effectively manage relationships, navigate complex team dynamics, and maintain a strong customer service orientation
- Strong commitment to client satisfaction and relationship management, ensuring high levels of customer service
- Collaborative and effective team player who appreciates constructive feedback, is willing to roll up their sleeves to contribute to team success, and is eager to learn new skills to support team members in achieving high performance.
- Experience leading teams, mentoring colleagues, and fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment
Technical Skills and Experience:
- Skilled at drafting, reviewing redlined documents, identifying potential liabilities, and mitigating risks by drafting special clauses and improving contract templates
- Minimum 5 years of experience managing counterparties and clients with a composed and customer service mindset when responding to RFPs (Requests for Proposals)
- Adept at identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency and creating solutions by leveraging processes and technologies
- Proficient in using contract management systems, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Slack, Jira, Asana, and Excel
- Highly structured with a systematic approach to task completion and advanced attention to detail
- Skilled at balancing daily workflow and managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism
- Experienced responding to various audit requests with a sense of urgency and thoroughness
HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS
In this role, you will work alongside all departments within the company to contribute to our goal of maintaining an efficient, accurate, risk-reduced, and responsive legal team. Success factors specific to this role include:
Within 30 days
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of 3Degrees’ business, products, and services.
- Develop a practical working knowledge of the key tools and software resources available to you, including the company’s contract management tool, trading platform, Salesforce, Jira, Asana, MS Word, and Google Workspace
- Gain a clear understanding of the processes involved to accurately track contractual obligations in the company database
- Meet with team members and internal clients to begin building trusted relationships and understand their needs
Within 90 days
- Gain comprehensive knowledge of 3Degrees’ business units, products, and service offerings
- Efficiently manage the initiation and completion of standard contracts, meeting deadlines with minimal supervision
- Identify initial opportunities for process improvements and begin drafting plans to address them
- Establish regular communication channels with key stakeholders to ensure alignment and timely updates
Within six months
- Developed a strong foundational knowledge of the renewable energy industry and able to apply best practices and standards in your daily work
- Recognized as a trusted strategic partner to multiple stakeholders, ensuring the timely and proficient output of contract deliverables
- Implement at least one significant efficiency project that improves the contracting process or system
- Demonstrate the ability to handle more complex and high-volume contracts, showcasing your growing expertise and reliability
Within one year
- Establish a track record of successfully managing a high volume of complex contracts, handling increased responsibilities and intricate scenarios
- Contribute to significant process improvements by developing a strategic plan to drive higher levels of efficiency, accuracy and stakeholder satisfaction
- Be recognized as a key advisor in the contracts domain, providing strategic insights and recommendations to mitigate risks and enhance contracting capabilities
- Established strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, consistently delivering high-quality contracts that meet or exceed company standards and client expectations
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The following compensation and benefits information is based on 3Degrees’ good faith estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future:
- Compensation: The starting base salary for this position is $134,000-$175,000 in the US. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include location, role requirements, relevant prior experience and/or education, or particular skills and expertise
- Benefits: This position is eligible for a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401k, flexible paid time off, and more. Additional information regarding the benefits available for this position can be found here
- Supplemental Pay: This position may be eligible to participate in discretionary bonus programs based on personal, department and company goals
