General Description:
The Academic Advisor will provide guidance to NOVA students about academic, transfer, career/workforce, and student development issues, needs, or experiences.
Duties and Tasks:
Provide academic planning and advising guidance to current, returning, and prospective NOVA students in-person, via phone, virtual face-to-face meeting, chat, and email.
Manage a caseload of students to support the achievement of the students’ goals including, but not limited to, ensuring proper program placement, successful enrollment, course completion, retention, graduation, transfer and/or job placement.
Conduct assessments of students’ needs to make referrals to supports and services.
Facilitate programs and workshops to support academic planning and advising.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required KSA's:
Knowledge of academic planning, course scheduling, transfer, career and student development advising.
Knowledge of college readiness research, persistence/retention and completion research and best practices for traditional and non-traditional students.
Knowledge or awareness of trends in higher education, with a particular emphasis on community college trends.
Skill in providing academic, career, and/or personal counseling to adolescents and adults.
Clearly articulated oral and written communication.
Skill in written communication, including the development of letters, memos, presentations, and course materials.
Skill in oral communication, including large and small group presentations and/or class lectures.
Skill in case management, including tracking of student caseload and the collection and reporting of data.
Proficiently skilled in computer usage, including Microsoft Office, e-mail, PeopleSoft Student Information System, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and researching information online.
Ability to independently plan and coordinate a variety of programs and projects.
Ability to understand and interpret campus and program policies and regulations.
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor respectful of diversity and multiculturalism.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to maintain a professional approach to working with students, families, faculty, and staff.
Ability to respond creatively and flexibly to changing needs and conditions.
Ability to work occasionally at and travel regularly to various NOVA campuses.

Ability to work evenings and occasional weekend hours.
Minimum Qualifications:
Some experience in a college setting in an advising or student services capacity.
Some experience in computer literacy, video conferencing, Google Applications, MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint.
Some experience using a higher education learning management system (i.e., Blackboard, CANVAS, etc.).
Must be able to travel to all NOVA campuses (this is not a remote position).
Position requires weekly evening and occasional weekend hours.

Significant advising experience.
Some experience working with student information systems (i.e., PeopleSoft, BANNER, etc.).
Significant experience in a college setting in an advising or student services capacity.
Bilingual proficiency.
