The Virginia Commonwealth University College of Humanities and Sciences is recruiting adjunct faculty for the Fall 2023 and possibly the Spring 2024 semesters within the Russian Program of the School of World Studies. The program is specifically looking for one instructor to teach the Russian 101 introductory course in Fall 2023 and (pending enrollment and Dean’s authorization) a Russian 102 course in Spring 2024.
Your application will remain active for one year; you may resubmit your application for subsequent years. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. NOTE: This is a part-time, non-benefited faculty position. Adjunct contracts are for one semester.
Position Responsibilities:
The course time for Fall 2023 must be Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1:00pm to 1:50 pm. The course modality is flexible according to instructor preference; this can be fully online, a mixed hybrid model, or fully in-person.
Course description for Introductory Russian:
“Semester course; 3 lecture hours. 3 credits. Enrollment requires any student with previous exposure to Russian to take the placement test to determine eligibility. For students with no prior knowledge of Russian. Beginning grammar, reading, writing and oral skills.”
Duties Include:
Instruct students in Russian class.
Meet all designated course instruction guidelines, including course preparation, assessments, grading, records management and submission of the course syllabus.
Grade assignments and exams in a timely manner based on instructions/rubric provided.
Respond to student inquiries within 24 hours.
Submit final grades according to College/Department policy.
Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION: Master’s degree in Russian language, History, Literature or related field. Experience in topics related to Russia.
COMPETENCIES/EXPERIENCE: For Russian 101, fluency in the Russian language. Demonstrated teaching experience at the university level. Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology. Demonstrated experience teaching in online formats. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s or PhD in Russian studies.
