Job Description

AECOM has an exciting opportunity for a Chief Engineer to join our East Region Remediation team. You will work with a diverse team of technical leaders across a broad range of practice areas delivering remediation consulting services to our key clients.

The Chief Engineer for AECOM’s Remediation Practice in the East Region will spearhead the technical delivery of complex environmental remediation projects, with a primary focus on facilitating collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, maximizing the use of enterprise-wide resources, and developing both regional and global engineering talent.

This leadership role is central to delivering innovative, high-quality engineering solutions that address future risks, while embedding sustainability principles into every project. The Chief Engineer will drive technical excellence, identify and communicate engineering standards, and leverage AECOM’s global expertise to deliver impactful outcomes for clients and communities alike.

The job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Technical Leadership & Quality Assurance:
    • Lead and manage the technical delivery of integrated remediation solutions, ensuring the production of high-quality designs, reports, and documentation that comply with industry standards and client expectations.
    • Provide expert guidance on complex environmental remediation challenges, ensuring that engineering deliverables address current issues and anticipate future risks.
    • Drive a strong focus on sustainability, embedding environmentally responsible practices into engineering designs to align with AECOM’s broader sustainability goals and long-term client needs.
    • Identify engineering needs (hiring needs) within the organization and work with hiring managers to augment/enhance needed design team skills. 
  • Collaboration & Enterprise-wide Integration:
    • Foster collaboration across AECOM’s multidisciplinary teams, including environmental scientists, engineers, and other business lines, to harness the full breadth of enterprise-wide capabilities.
    • Leverage AECOM’s global resources, specialized engineering knowledge, and cutting-edge technology platforms to deliver innovative and comprehensive project solutions.
    • Promote internal cross-functional coordination to ensure efficient project delivery and optimal outcomes for clients, while facilitating knowledge sharing and team building across business lines and regions.
  • Mentorship & Talent Development:
    • Lead the development and mentorship of engineering teams, cultivating an inclusive, growth-oriented environment that encourages professional development and technical excellence.
    • Build and develop regional and global teams that harness AECOM’s technical expertise, ensuring that team capabilities are aligned with evolving business needs and project demands.
    • Identify training opportunities to elevate the technical skills of team members and prepare them for future challenges in remediation and environmental engineering.
  • Engineering Standards & Risk Management:
    • Establish and maintain engineering standards specific to the remediation practice, ensuring that projects meet regulatory requirements while delivering long-term value to clients.
    • Develop forward-thinking engineering strategies that proactively identify and mitigate future risks, with a focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental protection.
    • Continuously improve engineering processes to enhance efficiency, reduce risks, and ensure the highest quality of project deliverables.
  • Innovation & Sustainability:
    • Champion the integration of sustainability in all aspects of engineering design, identifying opportunities to innovate in remediation techniques that protect natural resources and reduce environmental impacts.
    • Ensure that projects incorporate sustainability practices to contribute to long-term environmental health, aligning with AECOM’s commitment to delivering sustainable and resilient solutions for clients.
  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Engage directly with clients and stakeholders to understand project requirements, provide technical leadership, and ensure that engineering deliverables meet or exceed expectations.
    • Contribute technical expertise to business development efforts, assisting with proposals, bids, and presentations to support the growth of AECOM’s remediation practice in the East Region and globally.

    • At this level, individuals will have demonstrated creativity, foresight, and mature engineering judgment in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual engineering problems, determining program objectives and requirements, organizing programs and projects, and developing standards and guides for diverse engineering activities. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA/BS in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field + 12 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education, including 4 years of leadership
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensed
  • Due to the nature of the work, U.S. Citizenship is required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • 13+ years of experience in environmental remediation or engineering projects, with proven leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong record of facilitating team collaboration and utilizing global resources to deliver innovative and high-quality project outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring and developing engineering talent with a focus on technical excellence and sustainability.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Experience developing engineering standards and technical specifications in environmental remediation.
  • Strong understanding of sustainability practices in engineering and environmental design.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
