Job Summary:
The Integrative Medicine Physician at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center provides a comprehensive range of complementary and alternative medicine services, including but not limited to acupuncture, meditation, and biofeedback. The physician is responsible for diagnosing and treating patients, prescribing medications, and offering holistic therapies to promote health and wellness. This role includes providing consultation services to staff, participating in interdisciplinary meetings, and contributing to resident education. The physician also ensures compliance with regulatory standards and participates in administrative duties to maintain clinic operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Prepare and review patient case histories and gather data through interviews.
-Conduct patient examinations and order necessary diagnostic tests (e.g., x-rays, clinical laboratory tests).
-Interpret test results and develop appropriate treatment plans.
-Prescribe medications, diets, and integrative treatment modalities such as acupuncture, biofeedback, and yoga.
-Admit and discharge patients, managing their care throughout their treatment.
-Request specialty consultations and confer with other specialists as needed.
-Make inpatient rounds and offer consultation services to the Military Treatment Facility (MTF) staff for specialty training.
-Maintain accurate and timely clinical records, ensuring medical charting is completed within 72 hours of patient visits.
-Provide expert opinions to the Chief of Primary Medicine or referring physicians to support patient care.
-When necessary, provide Statements on Evaluation of Fitness in line with AR-40-501 and complete Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) paperwork.
-Deliver medical care, including responding to emergent issues, as designated by the MTF.
-Participate in additional administrative or clinical duties, including managing schedules, reviewing consults, monitoring patient access, and ensuring compliance with Joint Commission (JC) standards.
-Provide training to government employees and staff members on clinical procedures, serving as a mentor and educator in integrative medicine therapies.
-Participate in in-service training and teaching conferences with residents, providing lectures and supporting educational initiatives, such as the Integrative/Acupuncture Webinar.
-Attend monthly meetings to review and evaluate patient care, recommending corrective actions when necessary.
-Perform administrative duties, including maintaining clinical workload statistics, participating in Performance Improvement (PI) and Risk Management (RM) functions, and operating MHS GENESIS.
-Deliver integrative medicine services via telemedicine as part of the Tele-Pain service.
-Comply with clinic Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and support clinic operations.
-Specific Tasks for Integrative Medicine Services:
-Provide complementary and alternative medicine services, including acupuncture, guided imagery, meditation, yoga, biofeedback, aromatherapy, and integrative therapy.
-Educate and mentor residents, medical students, and student registered nurse anesthetists in integrative medicine techniques.
-Prescribe and dispense medications as directed by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
-Promote preventive care and health maintenance through patient education and counseling.
-Request referrals and consultations with other health resources as needed.
-Order diagnostic tests and provide patient follow-up care.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
-Possess one of the following: a Doctorate Degree in Medicine (M.D. or D.O.) from an accredited institution, or permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
-Successfully completed Undergraduate Program, Medical School, Internship, and Residency Program.
Licensure/Certification:
-Hold a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
-Board certification in a specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
-Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
-Valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number.
-Maryland state medical license required.
Experience:
-Minimum of one year of experience in acupuncture therapy.
-Experience or education in complementary and alternative medicine modalities such as biofeedback, guided imagery, hypnosis, -meditation, aromatherapy, or yoga.
-Minimum of one year of experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
-At least one year of teaching experience with residents, student nurses, or medical students in the last three years.
Skills:
-Exemplary customer service and communication skills.
-Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
-Fluent in English with the ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare providers.
