We believe providing Indigenous students with hands-on experience in emerging technologies is crucial for preparing them for future leadership roles in their communities. Unfortunately, there are not enough educational pathways for native youth to meaningfully engage with technology and computer science (CS). As an example, roughly only 20% of high schools on reservations offer a foundational computer science class, which we would like to change. Indigitize is a program that launched to expand access to computer science for Indigenous youth. SkoCode (Let’s Go Code) is the AmeriCorps program supported by Indigitize that aims to achieve that goal. SkoCode AmeriCorps members are trained by our curriculum team to provide high-quality, culturally-relevant computer science learning activities to K-12 students. Members are placed at one of our partner sites, typically in schools or supporting out of school time programs (ex. Boys and Girls Club) accomplish this. You will prepare, and then present these activities to different student groups throughout your week. This position requires roughly 30 hours of service per week throughout a term of service. Members will receive regular ongoing training to support their service throughout the term, in addition to receive professional computer science credentials through AWS without cost.
