OUTREACH COORDINATOR, (PARENTING TEENS PROGRAM)

JOB DESCRIPTION: Human Resources announces openings for a 1.0 FTE Outreach Coordinator, (Parenting Teens Program) position. This is a 260-days, Grade E-12 position. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES Collaborates with other teenage parenting staff in the operation of the programs serving pregnant and parenting teens; incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the program; supports efforts to keep expecting teens and teenage parents in school; encourages appropriate support from family members and community agencies. SUPERVISION Work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Counseling. Serves as coordinator for other specialists, home visitors and support personnel. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the full proficiency, supervisory level coordinator classification in the Teenage Parenting Program. GUIDELINES A wide range of federal and state regulations, mandates, judicial decisions relating to day-care facilities; supervisor’s instructions. CONTACTS Other APS central staff, principals, teachers, student services staff, students, parents, grandparents, community agencies, colleagues. RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed.) In collaboration with supervisor, establishes policies and procedures for the administration of the program, assigns duties and responsibilities to the staff/employees. Works cooperatively with support staff in planning and implementing all aspects of the program and operation. Provides crisis management and crisis intervention for students attending Family Education Center, Alternatives for Parenting Teens and Outreach Participants. Co-leads psycho−educational groups for students attending Family Education Center, Alternatives for Parenting Teens and Outreach Participants. Organizes, supervises and coordinates support groups for teenage mothers who are out of school or attending regular schools and need support, monthly support groups for young fathers. Provides direct counseling, conflict resolution through home visits, telephone calls or office visits to teenage mothers, young fathers and grandparents to facilitate attendance and/or enrollment in school. Performs related duties as required or assigned. EXPERIENCE: REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Thorough knowledge of the educational needs of culturally diverse teenage mothers, including those with limited English proficiency. Some knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the school system’s instructional programs, school requirements, and community resources. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with students, parents, school personnel, and resource persons in the community. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Evidence of ability to work cooperatively in various kinds of situations. Ability to work collaboratively with staff, teenage parents, and community service providers. Ability to work with parents who have limited English skills. Ability to challenge and motivate teenage mothers in a caring manner. Perfom other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE Master’s degree required in education, social science or related field, plus some successful experience working with diverse clientele and new immigrants, including experience working with the Hispanic community diverse communities in Arlington County or Northern Virginia and working with Spanish origin teenage parents’ teen parents; or any equivalent combination or education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION Drivers license required. PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES Work requires those physical attributes related to walking, standing, sitting, operating office and communications equipment, and lifting, moving, and carrying light equipment, supplies, etc. HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS Most assignments generally involve only exposure to normal, everyday risks; however, some assignments may involve working with students with disabilities that require knowledge of intervention and restraint techniques. Some assignments include activities in schools, centers, the community and homes Some activities involve working with individuals that may become irate, hostile, and demonstrate behavioral and emotional challenges towards parents and students. APPLY TO: SALARY: Salary range of $93,576 to $153,376 per hour based upon 24/25 pay plan DAYS:
