The Role
Art handlers are first and foremost responsible for ensuring the safety of artifacts and works of art. Art handling is a vital role in the Christie’s Auction process. Art handlers are responsible for art storage, handling, installation, packing, receiving and releasing art works of a wide range of property types. You will be closely working with Logistics Supervisors, Art departments, our Shipping team, the Client Services department and other related departments to ensure smooth Logistics arrangement of inventory. This is a flexible position operating out of Christie’s Fine Art Storage warehouse (CFASS) in Brooklyn and Christie’s Rockefeller Center in Manhattan as assigned.
Specific duties & responsibilities will include but are not limited to
Support Supervisors in the physical handling and processing of all 2D and 3D artwork
Framing and unframing art
Installation of artwork for photography and gallery exhibition
Barcode and tag all property
Scan all property in/out of warehouses, making sure Christie’s JDE systems reflect accurate inventory history at Christie’s facilities at both Christie’s Fine Art Storage in Redhook and Rockefeller Center in Manhattan
Store property in designated areas, adhering to Christie’s best practices
Communicate with relevant supervisors and departments regarding any condition issues, damages, losses or discrepancies in inventory
Maintain organization of warehouse; clean and organized storage and work areas, discarding packing material
Implement and sustain on-going warehouse maintenance projects, such as property organization, inventory physical checks, and racking property based on status (incoming, catalogue, ready for photo, ready for view, BI, or per department preference)
Assist Specialists with preparing property and staging artwork for cataloguing, conditioning, hilling and photography sessions
Lot up sales (printing and placing lot stickers as directed by Art department)
Process pre-sale temporary releases by obtaining necessary release paperwork from cashier’s, then tracking, tracing, scanning, and communicating the whereabouts of property to departments
Perform saleroom exhibition setups, breakdowns, and transfers to Collections Desk for customer pickup or transfer. Provide on-site support during exhibitions
Communicate between Specialist department and Logistics operations
Support all other Logistics functional areas as directed by management
Other duties as assigned by Management/Supervisor including working in the various warehouse and loading dock locations

The Candidate
High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED). College degree preferred but not required
Minimum of one (1) year of Art Handling experience
Knowledge of E-mail, Spreadsheet, and Word Processing software (Microsoft Office preferred)
Ability to learn Christie’s systems including, handheld scanner program, JDE, intranet and more
Ability to read and interpret documents; write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Strong attention to detail, proactive attitude, organizational skills and time management ability
Clear, effective, and professional communication in spoken and written English
Ability to multitask and prioritize
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Work is performed subject primarily to inside environmental conditions (i.e., warehouse and covered loading dock), and occasionally to outside environmental conditions
Noise level in the work environment is moderate, higher on sale or exhibition days, and at the loading dock
Perform physical tasks, including bending, kneeling, pulling, pushing, walking, standing for long periods of time, carrying and lifting 45 pounds or more. Physical activities include but are not limited to packing and unpacking/crating and uncrating
Extensive walking throughout Christie’s facilities at CFASS (200,000+ sq. ft.) and Rockefeller Center
Use of equipment & tools including but not limited to hammer, drill, tape measure, box cutter, level
