The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures is seeking an Assistant Curator to join our team.

Job Description

The purpose of this role is to support an ambitious program of exhibitions and programming. The Assistant Curator will work in close communication with the Curator of Collections and Senior Manager of Learning and Engagement performing research, generating interpretive materials, and editing content produced by the team.

The ideal candidate will have exceptional research and writing skills and an understanding of how to present content that is solidly supported by that research and easily accessible to the museum’s visitors and the public.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research exhibit topics and objects to facilitate the interpretation of the collection
  • Writes object and narrative labels for exhibitions.
  • Creates entries for the museum’s digital interpretation platform, Engage by Cell.
  • Assists in the development of the exhibition calendar, including brainstorming ideas for exhibitions.
  • Records research results in PastPerfect, T/m’s collections management database.
  • May serve as lead curator on specific exhibitions.
  • Presents on research and exhibitions to various stakeholders and at professional conferences/symposia.
  • Works with Marketing Strategist on copy for marketing and social media.
  • Copy edit texts; research, request, store, and return images, and object copyright permissions for use in exhibitions, publications, and communication materials, including website.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least two years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.A. in History, Art History, Public History, or related field
  • Experience in exhibit research
  • Experience working closely with museum collections
  • Experience working with a collections management database; knowledge of PastPerfect is preferred
  • Experience working with living artists

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Post-Graduate level research skills
  • Working knowledge of American art and history
  • Working knowledge of World art and history

Salary

$17.96 - $24.04 per hour commensurate on education, experience, and internal equity.

Shift

Full time, benefit eligible staff position. This job is 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, with an occasional evening or weekend.
