Assistant Director of Marketing

The Assistant Director for Marketing coordinates and implements marketing and student fan engagement initiatives in conjunction with the Marketing and Promotions Team; oversees the management of game-day entertainment for athletic events; assists with the development and implementation of the Athletic Department’s comprehensive annual marketing campaign; supervises interns and student employees; manages the spirit team (which includes both the dance and cheer teams), pep band and mascot; and assists with other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Drive student attendance and student engagement through strategic planning in conjunction with Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing and Promotions

  • Develop student street team network and serve as the liaison with Associated Students appointed Athletics Chair.
  • Develop year-long campus student activities calendar.
  • Develop and execute campus communication plan to students, faculty/staff.
  • Develop and execute rewards system for students.
  • Oversee and collaborate with the official athletics student fan group.

Plan and execute an enhanced gameday experience for ticketed athletic events, working closely with the strategic communications and ticket offices

  • Coordinate public address announcements, video board displays, entertainment and presentations.
  • Ensure anthem singers, music and recognition elements are appropriately developed and managed.
  • Ensure sponsorship and promotional commitments are fulfilled.
  • Assist in creation of graphics for in-venue elements.

Assist with the development and implementation of the Athletic Department marketing campaign

  • Assist Assistant Athletic Director of marketing and promotion with designing and conducting an advertising campaign to promote USD Athletics, the Athletic Department brand and individual sports using a variety of outlets to include, but not be limited to, social media, print, radio, and television.
  • Coordinate a promotional plan for USD students and campus personnel.
  • Oversee communication with students and campus personnel.
  • Work with the Community of Human Resources to develop campus community support at athletic events.
  • Assist with the promotional plan to increase engagement with the greater San Diego community.

Supervise interns, student employees, and street team students each year

  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and hiring student interns and student workers.
  • Assigns, delegates duties to and supervises interns and student workers.
  • Evaluates interns each semester for grades and feedback.

Coordinate the activities of the spirit teams (dance and cheer), the pep band and mascot

  • In conjunction with the Assistant AD, collaborate with spirit team directors to enhance the gameday environment.
  • Manage the appearance calendar for spirit squad, band, and mascot

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Works a significant number of athletic events during the year. Must be able to work long hours, nights and weekends.
  • Ability to attend on and off campus events required.
  • Successful completion of required background checks.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • At least two years’ experience in marketing and promotions or related field required, three or more years preferred.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends required.
  • Ability to attend on- and off-campus events required.
  • Excellent written, interpersonal and communications skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in media preferred.
  • Knowledge of athletics and experience in public relations and personnel management desirable.
  • Knowledge of MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite and other graphic design programs desirable.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Heartsaver CPR /AED certification required within 6 weeks of employment.
  • California driver’s license required within 6 weeks of employment.
Posting Salary:

$5,373.34 - 5,373.35 per month; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
