Assistant Head of Upper School

General Summary:

The Assistant Head of Upper School serves with faculty, staff and administrators to support the School’s students and mission. The Assistant Head of Upper School assists the Head of Upper School in organizing and fostering a positive and safe learning environment. Acting as the day-to-day manager of the Upper School academic program, the Assistant Head helps to lead, manage, and supervise a variety of educational programs. The Assistant Head is committed to developing and supporting both traditional and innovative academic offerings, as well as working to support the social and emotional development of all our students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Head of Upper School in his/her duties at all times, and acts in the capacity of the Head of Upper School during the Head of Upper School’s absence.
  • Works collaboratively with the Dean of Students, Director of College Guidance, School Counselor, and US administrative assistant.
  • Functions as the role of the academic dean to promote the academic development of students in a rigorous, supportive school environment.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, synthesize, and report data effectively.
  • Directs department chairs and academic leaders to manage issues relating to the academic advancement of US students.
  • Manages the US Classroom Accommodations process for students, families and faculty.
  • Supports department chairs and students with classroom accommodations with final exam protocols, schedules and logistics.
  • Assists the Director of Auxiliary Programs with Summer Institute. • Manages and reviews myUSM grades, comments and report cards before they are released to families.
  • Prepares materials and manages the registration process for advisers and their advisees.
  • Prepares and manages the onboarding process for new students in grades 9-12.
  • Facilitates Cum Laude.
  • Serves on the hiring committee for US Faculty. • Onboards and supports new faculty.
  • Builds and manages the US schedule, as well as student course selection and registration.
  • Leads and sets the agenda for the Academic Council.
  • Supports faculty with an open gradebook platform, policies, and best practices.
  • Promotes and supports positive student behavior in alignment with the School’s Common Trust.
  • Analyzes student performance data. Determines ways to improve instruction within a diverse community of learners.
  • Helps monitor the quality of classroom instruction.
  • Assists with the evaluation of faculty and staff.
  • Provides creative leadership in developing, implementing and delivering instructional strategies or school-wide academic initiatives.
  • May teaches an academic subject in addition to his/her administrative responsibilities.
  • Assists with and supports the Advanced Placement (AP) program.
  • Supports faculty and the Upper School Counselor with students who have emotional, academic, or behavioral issues.
  • Works in conjunction with the Head of Upper School in supervising school activities.
  • Support faculty with curricular issues, curriculum development, classroom management, and overall best practices in pedagogy.
  • Keeps abreast of current research, innovations, and trends in the areas of curriculum and instruction and provides pertinent information and recommendations.
  • Supports diversity, equity, and inclusion topics within the curriculum with JEDI division liaison.
  • Assists in the promotion of a positive school climate and staff morale through positive feedback and recognition.
  • Promotes a safe and healthy school environment. Responds to crises when necessary.
  • Creates effective parent, faculty, and student communications. Responds to community inquiries regarding USM’s instructional programs.
  • Serves on school committees as assigned.
  • Prepares and maintains records as required.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to effectively deal with students, faculty, staff, and parents and support them.
  • Knowledge and understanding of child and adolescent physical, emotional, and intellectual development.
  • Knowledge of curriculum design, planning, development, implementation and evaluation, assessment processes, and how they should operate in an effective school.
  • Strong knowledge of the School’s curriculum.
  • Effective speaker, writer, and teacher.
  • Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with all people, including those from diverse racial, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. Ability to contribute to cultural diversity and inclusion for educational enrichment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; capable of using tact and diplomacy in dealing with others.
  • Strong organizational and effective time-management skills.
  • High level of maturity, resiliency, confidentiality, and assertiveness.
  • Ability to multitask and balance simultaneous demands.

  • Capable of competently operating technology. Education and Experience:
  • Master’s Degree in an academic field, education, or related field
  • 5-8 years of successful experience as an educator and administrator, preferred • Successful experience working with Upper School students, preferred
  • Previous experience working effectively with culturally and socioeconomically diverse populations, preferred
