About the School of Architecture and Design’s Industrial Design Program

Home to Louisiana's only degree-granting industrial design program, UL Lafayette is the only university where we teach how to generate concepts that optimize the purpose, significance, and form of products for consumers and producers. Our unique program emphasizes practical concern for design restrictions while creating products that cater to human characteristics, requirements, and interests. The four-year professional degree in industrial design encourages collaborative, experiential learning with diverse disciplines, and a hands-on learning environment that is conducive to creative exploration. We emphasize a broad understanding and sensitivity to environmental and social concerns, while working to help develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We want to advance the industrial design profession with the knowledge that user needs, human-centered design, universal design, sustainability, and ergonomics all play an integral role in unique and successful products.

We work to advance industrial design knowledge, cultivate aesthetic sensibilities, and improve the material conditions and the needs of people and their environments. Our program teaches students to become proficient in sketching, visual communication, form development, physical and digital model making, and graphic layout. The Industrial Design Program is always seeking out new methodologies to incorporate technology into the curriculum, such as advanced computer modeling, photorealistic rendering, rapid prototyping, and CNC milling. We want students to be well prepared for the professional design world and have the ability and passion to make a positive contribution to the betterment of humankind through teaching, research, practice, and service.
