Job Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Engaged Scholarship and Community Engagement,
The Associate Director of Community Engagement is a position charged with overseeing the implementation and evaluation of pioneering efforts to bring Barnard's resources to communities throughout New York City. As a member of the CEI leadership team, the AD will be responsible for the management , maintenance and evaluation of STEAM in the City, CEI's signature sponsored research program. The AD will work with the CEI Director to identify, propose and support similar programming opportunities. Together with the CEI Director, the AD will support relationship building and collaboration with both on and off-campus partners and to maximize the College's civic engagement in and with communities and institutions throughout NYC.

  • The Director of Community Engagement will work closely with the Director of Engaged Scholarship, Vice Provost, Sponsored Research and Barnard faculty to strategically integrate research, teaching and service with the College's civic engagement in and with communities and institutions throughout NYC.
  • The Director of Community Engagement will seek to optimize the College's approach to civic and community engagement through facilitating relationships between the College, community leaders and stakeholders across the city as well as in Harlem and Morningside Heights.
  • The Director will ensure that community engagement work is rooted in sustained and meaningful relationships with the local community and maximizes existing institutional efforts.
  • The Director ensures that the Office of CEI is an accessible and efficient "front door" for students who want to do work in the community, providing them optimal opportunities through the rich resources available through Barnard, Columbia, and beyond.
  • The Director is in a position of leadership charged with overseeing the execution and expansion of pioneering efforts to bring Barnard's resources to communities throughout New York City.
  • The Director provides management and oversight of the Coordinator STEAM in the City, and is ultimately responsible for the success and expansion of Barnard College's efforts to expand STEAM In The City and other sponsored programming.

Job Description:

Essential duties
  • Supervise the graduate assistants and student interns
  • Assist with the onboarding and professional development of student interns
  • Provide office and administrative support
  • Collaborate with the Director to develop new curriculum, programs, and initiatives
  • Collaborate with relevant team members, supports communication platforms such as the CEI website, brochures, one-pagers, newsletters, donor reports, etc., assisting with the overall marketing and content strategy of CEI in support of programming initiatives.
  • Develop and manage the day-to-day execution of special initiatives supporting students, staff, faculty and community partners, such as voter education, the Keep it Local Guide, etc.
  • Track success and outcomes on programs including post-program surveys, and propose optimizations based on feedback.
  • Contribute as a proactive team member to additional projects with other staff as needed.
  • Manage and oversee the Coordinator of STEAM in the City and recruitment of teacher fellows in the cohort
  • Manage and oversee other related sponsored projects and programming
  • Ability and willingness to work some weekends and evenings, ability and willingness to travel up to 15% of the time.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Required Qualification Summary
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of experience in managing educational programming, ideally in collaborative and creative partnership with other institutions.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience working in a higher education institution and particularly with students in a liberal arts and sciences environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across stakeholder communities
  • Experience in civic engagement and high level of interpersonal skills and relationship building
  • Ability to manage toward committed and measurable outcomes
  • Demonstrated commitment to the development of young people and social justice principles as they relate to ethical community engagement
  • Understanding of the intersection of DEI and community engagement.
  • Experience with K-12 education, preferably in STEAM related areas
  • Master's degree in Administration, Education, Communications, Public Policy or related areas

Preferred qualifications
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Experience with program evaluation

Salary Range: $85,000.00 - $90,000.00

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
