Salary for Announcement

The minimum of the pay range for this position is $57,600. We anticipate the qualified candidate to be placed between $57,600 - $68,000. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Associate Director of Student Organizations and Leadership Programs is a creative and passionate student affairs professional who operates from a lens of understanding and prioritizing equity and inclusion in working with MSU Denver's diverse students. The Associate Director is responsible for leading a comprehensive student organization program and provides vision and support for the Center for Multicultural Engagement and Inclusion's (CMEI) co-curricular leadership programming. To this end, the Associate Director will identify and execute strategies to both broaden and deepen student engagement at the University.

The Associate Director will actively collaborate with academic departments and Student Affairs functional areas to enhance and strengthen existing student organizations and leadership programming and to promote the development of new student organizations and leadership programming. The Associate Director sets expectations for student organization advising, leads the training and development for advisors, and is both innovative and strategic in setting the overall advising agenda for student organizations. The Associate Director has a keen attention to safety and risk management considerations, and partners with key institutional colleagues to ensure that student organizations are operating safety and ethically.

The Associate Director is responsible for the supervision of the Assistant Director of Student Leadership Programs and the Assistant Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life and Student Government. As such, the Associate Director has shared responsibility for the overall operations of the institution's fraternity and sorority chapters, student government, and leadership development programs and works with CMEI staff to synergize student leadership development across these domains.

Duties/Responsibilities

40% - Student Organization Program Oversight

  • Enhance the University's advising model for faculty and staff involvement with student organizations.

  • Provide ongoing training and support for student organization advisors.

  • Assist student leaders with advisor recruitment, selection, and rapport building.

  • Critically evaluate current structures (both direct and indirect) which impact the ways in which student organizations are able to effectively engage their peers and carry out their unique missions.

  • Partner directly with academic Deans and department chairs to ensure integration of academic co-curricular groups with the student organization structure.

  • Collaborate with Assistant Director of Student Leadership Programs and colleagues leading work to cultivate student leadership and implement relevant programs to enhance leadership development within student organizations.

  • In consultation with colleagues, regularly audit, review, and update relevant operational expectations ["policies"] for student organizations, their leaders, and their advisors. Draft, edit, and publish relevant standards, guides, and/or manuals as necessary to educate the community on such operational expectations. Engage in this policy work with a critical lens and a goal of social justice.

  • With support from colleagues in the Budget Office and Accounting Services, oversee the fiscal structure(s), available resources, and related policies impacting student organization accounts and finances. Consider equity and justice in fiscal strategies impacting student organizations.

  • Manage the student organization software and related technical collateral.

  • Manage the Campus Event Funding (CEF) program, which provides funding for student organizations to carry out engagement activities. Ensure that the fund is maximizing impact for student engagement in an equitable and appropriate manner.

  • Manage the Recruiting & Promotional Funding (R&P) program, which provides funding for student organizations to purchase recruitment, promotional, and marketing items.

  • Manage the Student Organization Resource Room and the related materials/supplies.

  • Actively participate in campus-wide (Auraria Higher Education Center) initiatives designed to promote student organizations.

  • Maintain relationships with partner institutions and the Auraria Higher Education Center.

20% - Direction of Student Leadership Programs

  • In consultation with the CMEI Assistant Dean/Director, set the strategic vision for co-curricular leadership programming in CMEI. Ensure that this vision centers equity and operationalizes social justice to align with the University's and department's strategic plan and goals.

  • Assess existing models for leadership programming in Student Affairs and lead efforts to both broaden (scale) efforts and strengthen (deepen) the quality and learning of students involved in and interacting with and leadership programs.

20% - Supervision and Operations

  • Provides excellent leadership and overall supervision for two professional staff members. Supervises the Assistant Director responsible for the Urban Leadership Program, Equity Peer Leader Program, civic engagement and collaborative programming related to student leadership and the Assistant Director responsible for co-advising student government and fraternity and sorority advising.

  • Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and hold student employees accountable to supporting program operations.

  • Review relevant documents, policies, and procedural documents as needed (constitution, elections procedures, member handbooks, etc.) and shepherd such documents through the editing/updating process.

  • Monitor allocated budget and expenses.

  • Participate in annual budget process to request funding through the Student Affairs Board (SAB), which allocates student fees for programs. Prepare collateral materials to make a compelling case for ongoing funding of programs/operations within the CMEI.

10% - Assessment & Reporting

  • Track student participation, assess student learning, and manage data for all relevant program areas, and in other areas related to student engagement, as requested.

  • Regularly communicate (report) on student participation and outcomes; do so with disaggregated information on relevant student demographic characteristics including race and ethnicity.

10% - Related Other Duties

  • Actively participate in committees and working groups related to equity and student

  • Lead and/or contribute to special projects and/or initiatives, as requested that relate to equitable student engagement.

  • Participate in trainings and relevant professional development activities to support professional and/or departmental growth. Work to operationalize and/or integrate learning from these trainings into the work unit and work processes.

  • Be an innovator, a disrupter, and a change agent for equity and student engagement.

  • Strive to recognize inequities in the work and in oneself and strive to do better. Seek out opportunities to take [calculated] risks in support of a more engaged and equitable student community at MSU Denver.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Experience working with underrepresented students specifically, low-income, first-generation, and racially/ethnically diverse student leaders in a college/university setting.

  • Experience working with students in an educational setting and understanding of contemporary equity-minded leadership development and identity development theory, research, and practice.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in advising, developing, coordinating, and evaluating programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned Master's Degree in higher education administration, student affairs, education leadership, counseling, social work, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience impacting equity and social justice outcomes.

  • Substantive experience working directly with student organizations.

  • Professional experience working to advise or otherwise support fraternities, sororities, or student governance groups.

  • Experience conducting program assessment or program evaluation for improvement.

Work Hours

  • 40 hours per week
  • Hybrid schedule (on-campus and remote) available for this position.
