The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day. The Associated Press is looking for a... generalist in motion graphics, illustration and web design to build beautiful, engaging visuals, with the goal of helping digital audiences better understand news stories. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild. Based in any U.S. city with an AP bureau, your daily work will center around quickly prototyping and producing visualizations for breaking and spot news stories, building interactive web pages and creating illustrations. You’ll communicate with editors and reporters to understand the needs and backgrounds of their stories, and then you’ll use this information to develop mockups using software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects and Figma. Responsibilities: In this role, you will be part of a creative team responsible for visual content for news stories. You will work on projects across beats and teams, from illustrations on how AI works to creating a web page layout for an investigative story. You will also be encouraged to pitch own ideas for creating visuals for stories. As an AP journalist, you may be asked to work at night or on weekends as coverage demands. Bring a detailed eye for composition layout, typography, timing and movement – you’ll be expected to deliver creative excellence. Preferred Qualifications: • Advanced skills in design, layout and typography, illustration and web design. • Fluency in Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere). • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills: You’re a considerate collaborator, valued partner and team player. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex and challenging story lines. • Eagerness to pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity. • Professional competency in a language besides English is a strong plus. Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. • At least five years' experience with illustration and web design experience working for digital publications, broadcast stations, digital news outlets or an AP bureau or regional desk. • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. • Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory. • A portfolio or work samples are required. This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $52,046 and $82,934 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy. We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role. Application deadline is 11:59pm EST on August 6, 2024. AP seeks to build an inclusive organization grounded in respect for differences. We support all aspects of diversity and provide equal employment opportunity to all employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, marital status, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or status as a veteran.
