Audio Originals Producer

Macmillan Audio is seeking experienced Producers (as contractors) to make and deliver programs for our Audio Originals output. These audiobooks range in scale and genre, including innovative non-fiction to full-cast audio dramas. This role includes all aspects of production: casting, budgeting, negotiating with talent, directing and managing post-production. Producers will ideate and collaborate with Macmillan’s manager of content development, in-house producers, sound designers and studio staff.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Production, the producer will work with a highly-skilled team that delivers some of the best audiobooks in the business. We’re looking for producers who are passionate about storytelling, who can handle complex and challenging projects, and who love to innovate and push the boundaries of audio.

The producer will deliver programs on a project-to-project basis. The producer must be able to work with authors, agents, narrators and post-production experts to manage projects from the earliest stages through to completion. An understanding of audio recording, studio production, sound design and multicast production is preferred.

What you'll do:

  • Cast, produce and deliver Audio Originals
  • Collaborate with authors and agents to establish and secure casting choices
  • Build and manage production budgets, negotiate narrator fees, manage narrator contracts
  • Direct narrators if required, either in-house or remotely
  • Listen to rough mixes and provide detailed feedback for revisions
  • Monitor and track all phases of post-production with external vendors
  • Collaborate with in-house staff to trouble-shoot production challenges

What you'll bring:

  • Detailed knowledge of audio production and emerging trends in Audio Original content
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, especially production management, team-building and budgeting
  • Editorial experience in a content development environment, including script adaptation for audio formatting
  • A network of narrators, including established and emerging talent
  • Understanding of diversity initiatives that are transforming media culture and practices

Ideal Experience:

  • At least 4-6 years in audio production, either in a publishing house or working with vendors that supply audiobooks and Audio Originals. Candidates with adjacent media experience – radio, podcasts or broadcast media will be considered
  • Direct experience of working with talent including professional narrators, author-narrators and VIPs
  • Experience of script adaptation, sound design and the workflow required to deliver Audio Originals
  • Knowledge and understanding of union rules that pertain to multicast productions
  • College degree preferred, but will consider candidates with equivalent experience gained through direct work
    within the audiobook, radio, digital media and TV industries

This production work is predominantly based in New York. Macmillan offers flexible working arrangements for
contractors.

This role will have an hourly rate of $50/hour.
